2008 WGC Accenture Match Play Championship
Golf’s version of March Madness, will take place this week at The Gallery Golf Club at Dove Mountain in Marana, AZ. 64 of golf’s best will be split up into 4 brackets just as the NCAA Tournament is. Each bracket is named in memory of a legend. The bracket names are, Ben Hogan, Sam Snead, Gary Player, and Bobby Jones. This event might be even more crazy and unpredictable than the hoops version that takes place in about a month. The overall number 1 seed will be none other than Tiger Woods. While the odds on favorite is of course Tiger, this is one event where you just never know what will happen. Tiger has won the event twice when he won it back-to-back in 2003 and 2004. Last years winner Henrik Stenson defeated Geoff Ogilvy 2&1 during the 36 hole final round. There will be 26.250 FedEx Cup points available this week, along with a purse of $8 million.
While almost every other tournament is played by stroke play totaling four rounds. This event you play just one golfer for 18 holes, but its not the overall best score that wins. Golfers compete for each individual hole and the golfer with the most holes wins. If one golfer is far enough ahead that his opponent is mathematically eliminated, then the match is stopped and the winner is crowned. To kind of explain the terms, if a golfer is up 2 holes with one hole to go, the other golfer is done because he can’t make up two holes at once. This match would then be over and the winner would have won 2&1. Just as someone up five holes with four to go would win by the score of 5&4. All matches are 18 holes except for the final that is 36 holes.
Picking a winner in this event can be pretty tricky, and while the safe bet is of course either Tiger or Phil Mickelson, anyone in the field can get on a hot streak and walk away victorious. For example the lowest seed to win the tournament is when Kevin Sutherland was ranked 62nd in 2002 and won the event. The #1 seed has only made it to the final four 4 out of the 9 times. Last year was the first time someone other than the #1 seed in the top 10 won the event, when #9 Stenson took home the trophy. This will mark the 10 time this event will be played, so its hard to say just who really has the edge because of how crazy it has been so far.
While if we had to put our money on anyone to win it would be Tiger Woods, but due to the craziness of this event. We will pick 4 different golfers from each bracket that we think will have a good chance to win it all
Bobby Jones Bracket
Gary Player Bracket
Sam Snead Bracket
Ben Hogan Bracket
