2008 Wyndham Championship Predictions

Written August 12, 2008 by Jason Lowry

For a guy like Tiger Woods the 2008 PGA Tour season couldn’t end any faster, as he sits at home nursing an injury, but for many golfers it marks a time where the top 144 golfers take part in the 2nd annual FedEX Cup Playoffs, and the rest of the field either sits at home or joins the Nationwide Tour. Last week golf fans saw a bit of a repeat as Padraig Harrington took home his 2nd straight major, as he came from behind in the final round on Sunday to win the PGA Championship over Sergio Garcia and Ben Curtis. While none of these guys will be teeing it up this weekend at the 2008 Wyndham Championship, the defending champion Brandt Snedeker will be in action to defend his title. With many golfers playoff stakes on the ride this weekend, Jason Lowry is going to give you his 3 guys he thinks will play well this weekend out of the favorites, guys in the middle of the pack, and a long shot.

Favorite: Vijay Singh +1000 at Sportsbook.com
Though many will likely question us putting Singh as the guy to beat this weekend, as you really don’t know what you are going to get with Singh any given week. He has looked great like when he won the Bridgestone, but just before that and after he failed to make the cut at the British Open and the PGA Championship. Singh remains one of the best iron players in the world, and we think if he can get them really locked in this weekend, and start making some putts, than Singh can get back to his winning ways. A win this weekend is likely not all thats on Singh’s mind, as he needs to get his game ready for the playoffs that are getting ready to start.

Middle of the Pack: Brandt Snedeker +2500 at Sportsbook.com
Snedeker hasn’t been anything special this season, as he only has 5 top 10 finishes, but you have to like the performance this guy put on when he tied for 9th at a very difficult US Open. Winning this event last year remains Snedeker’s only win on tour, and we think he is going to come in with some much needed confidence to play well. Snedeker is coming off a 24th place finish at the PGA Championship, where he really just couldn’t get anything going. Snedeker is a great pick this weekend, so don’t think twice about this one.

Long Shot: Davis Love III +4000 at Sportsbook.com
We are taking the old guy to come out and play well this weekend, as he has shown he can do so just a couple years ago when he won this event in 2006. Love III has 19 career victories, but 2008 really hasn’t been his year as he has failed to make it in the top 10 once this season. With this being the last tournament of the year, a win here would not only give him a great way to finish the season, it could send him into the top 144 and into the playoffs. as he currently sits in 50th.
