2009-10 Minnesota Timberwolves Predictions

Written October 26, 2009 by Steve Janus

Things have been going downhill for the Minnesota Timberwolves for several years now, but they are at least trying to make a change, and any change at this point is a step in the right direction.  Kevin McHale is out, David Kahn is in and the difficult process of trying to build this team into a contender again begins.  It hasn’t exactly started out well for Kahn, who used the Wovles’ first round draft pick this year to select Spanish star Ricky Rubio, who will likely never play basketball for Minnesota, opting to stay in Europe for two more years.  It’s not all bad news for the T-Wolves.  They do return Al Jefferson, who can be dominant in the paint, plus added Jonny Flynn, Wayne Ellington, and Ramon Sessions to help their backcourt.  The NBA odds show Minnesota tied for the worst odds in the entire league for winning a championship this year at +20,000 though, so it would be unreasonable to have too high of hopes for them.

Frontcourt - Al Jefferson and Kevin Love highlight a frontcourt with a lot of potential.  Both big men have the ability to pull in a double-double each night, however, Love will start the season on the bench with a fractured left hand suffered in the preseason.  Love had more double-doubles than any other rookie in the NBA last season (29) and should improve as he gains more experience, provided he can stay healthy.  The Wolves don’t have a lot of depth behind either player, so they will need Love back as soon as possible if they are going to have any sort of success in the paint.

Backcourt – Flynn is currently listed as Minnesota’s starting point-guard, which isn’t surprising considering many felt he was the best point guard in the draft this season.  Sessions moves to the two guard position from point guard, where he excelled for the Bucks last year.  Hopefully the move doesn’t adversely affect his play.  This is a very young backcourt and at this point it unclear how much potential they have.  Flynn could be one of the best in a few years, but his supporting cast isn’t exactly top-notch.

Summary - The T-Wolves won’t be good in the West, but they should be better than they were last season.  There should be more good news on the horizon with Minnesota looking at 3 first round draft pick in the upcoming draft, but, unfortunately for the Timberwolves fans, it could be a long time before this team gets back into playoff contention.

Prediction: 30-52, 5th Northwest Division
