2009 San Francisco 49ers NFL Season Predictions

Written June 25, 2009 by Jason Lowry

San Francisco 49ers 2009 PredictionsThe San Francisco 49ers are tired of losing and head coach Mike Singletary looks like the right guy to change things around. After starting the season 2-5 the 49ers fired head coach Mike Nolan and promoted Singletary to head coach. They didn’t exactly turn things around with Singletary on board as they finished the season just 7-9, but the team did win 4 of its final 5 games. With a new attitude and a couple of big moves this offseason the 49ers could make a run at the NFC West this season.

The biggest move the 49ers made this offseason came in the NFL draft when standout wide receiver Michael Crabtree fell right into their laps at pick No.10 in the NFL Draft. Crabtree gives the 49ers there biggest threat at wide receiver in years, and he should instantly make an impact in the passing game. The team also got good news this offseason when veteran wide out Isaac Bruce decided to stick around for another season. The team also added a solid No.3 option at wide receiver in Brandon Jones. The 49ers also added some depth to the running game, as they selected Alabama running back Glen Coffee with their 3rd round pick and brought back full back Moran Morris after he spent a season with the Lions. The 49ers also added some depth to their defense with the additions of defensive end Demetric Evans and linebacker Marques Harris. Overall it wasn’t a huge offseason for the 49ers, but they continue to head in the right direction with solid draft picks and key free agent pick ups.

The 49ers offense could really make some strides this season, as star running back Frank Gore could have his best season if the team is able to throw the football around with a little more success. Also bringing back fullback Morgan Morris should really help open some holes for Gore. The 49ers are also hoping that with the addition of Coffee in the backfield they can cut down on some of Gore’s carries and keep him more fresh as the season rolls on. There will be a battle at the quarterback position between Shaun Hill and 2005 No.1 overall pick Alex Smith. Hill doesn’t exactly look pretty throwing the football, but he has a solid 7-3 record when he gets the opportunity to start. Smith on the other hand has played in just 3 games the last two seasons because of shoulder problems, but the team is going to give him every chance to win the starting job. I have already mention the talented trio of receivers the 49ers will have on display this season, but they have a couple other guys that could get in the mix like Josh Morgan and Jason Hill. At tight end the 49ers will once again go with Vernon Davis, and if this guy is as good as they say he is, they need to start getting him the football with a little more regularity. The offensive line should be pretty solid, as Marvel Smith comes into to take over at right tackle, while Joe Staely makes the move from right to left tackle. Inside the team’s best lineman is center Eric Heitmann, but they have some emerging talent at guards in David Baas and Chilo Rachal. Overall the offense has the talent to be much better in 2009, but a lot will depend on what kind of play they get out whoever ends up starting at quarterback. Bet the 49ers +250 to win the NFC West at Sportsbook.com.

On defense the 49ers have a pretty solid group up front led by defensive end Justin Smith, who was named the teams MVP last season. Isaac Sopoaga will likely hold down the other end spot, while Aubrayo Franklin is the man in the middle. At linebacker the 49ers have one of the best young middle linebackers in the game in Patrick Willis, and he is joined by the veteran Takeo Spikes. On the outside the team is hoping to get even more out of Parys Haralson, who ended up leading the team with 8 sacks last season. On the other side the 49ers are hoping Manny Lawson can finally develop into the player they envisioned when they took him No.22 overall in 2006. In the secondary the 49ers have a very solid duo at the cornerback position with Nate Clements and Walt Harris. At safety the team has decided they no longer want the services of Mark Roman, and are ready to hand over the position to Dashon Goldson. Goldson will play the free safety spot along side strong safety Michael Lewis, who has done a very good job in his first two seasons with the 49ers recording a 100 or more tackles in each season. What this unit really needs is to put more pressure on the quarterback, as it will not only put teams in long yardage situations, but it will also help the play out of the secondary. I have a strong feeling the defense will continue to get better with Singletary in charge, and if they make a big stride along with the offense, this could be your surprise team in 2009. Bet the 49ers +4000 to win the NFL Super Bowl at Sportsbook.com.

My Prediction: Tie 2nd in NFC West (8-8) I don’t think the 49ers are going to crack the .500 mark this season, but I feel like they are going to be a very good football team. There is the potential for this group to really surprise everyone and throw together a 10 win season, but I still think they are a year away from really being a threat to win the division.
