Atlantic Division:
1.) Florida State Seminoles – QB Christian Ponder and the ACC’s top offensive line will keep the ball moving this season. Six new defensive starters, and a brutal schedule that includes 11 bowl teams, will certainly test the ‘Noles. But FSU appears ready to build on raised expectations and its 9-4 mark from last season. 2.) Wake Forest Demon Deacons – The Deacons certainly expect to win with senior QB Riley Skinner and nine offensive starters returning. The loss of Aaron Curry, Alphonso Smith and Sam Swank will certainly be felt. With 28 wins in three seasons, Jim Grobe’s team is a proven commodity in the ACC. 3.) Clemson Tigers – C.J. Spiller returns behind a shored up offensive line, and the Tigers’ defensive line should be one of the best in the business. Clemson will have to break in a new quarterback which is never an easy task, and they’ll face a more difficult schedule this season. If Dabo Swinney can settle the QB spot, the Tigers have contending talent. Full Preview: 2009 Clemson College Football Predictions
4.) NC State Wolfpack – Confidence at NC State is soaring after QB Russell Wilson directed four straight wins to end the season which led to a bowl bid. But the Wolfpack are paper-thin on both lines, and they’ll have to face Wake, BC and FSU on the road. Tom O’Brien has the ‘Pack on the rise, but contention won’t come until 2010. 5.) Maryland Terrapins – QB Chris Turner and RB Da’Rel Scott key the offense, and they have a punter in Travis Baltz who can seriously change field position. The loss of three offensive linemen and seven defensive starters will take its toll. Ralph Friedgen has a track record for defying odds, but these are long ones in 2009. 6.) Boston College Eagles – The Eagles return 16 starters which should help new coach Frank Spaziani’s transition. Coastal Division:
1.) Virginia Tech Hokies – QB Tyrod Taylor, a talented backfield, and a team with the top returning defense will give the Hokies a shot at National Title contention. The passing game still has questions, and a daunting early schedule that begins with Alabama will show how good this team really is. Virginia Tech is a two-time defending league champion and they continue to pair talent with a find-a-way track record year after year. Full Preview: Virginia Tech Football Predictions 2009
2.) Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets – Nine offensive starters return to try and perfect Paul Johnson’s triple-option attack. But they’re top three defensive linemen from a year ago are now playing on Sunday’s. Familiarity with the scheme, and a favorable home slate should lead to a 10-win season. Full Preview: Georgia Tech 2009 Football Predictions
3.) North Carolina Tar Heels – An ACC-best nine defensive starters return with an improved talent base at UNC. The loss of last year’s top three receivers will limit T.J. Yates’ aerial options. The Tar Heels are coming on and should be ready for a late date with the Hokies. Full Preview: North Carolina Football Predictions 2009
4.) Miami Hurricanes – QB Jacory Harris is ready to lead an experienced offense, and the defense is a year older now. Two new coordinators will require time for players to make adjustments, and that will be tough considering Miami opens with four straight Top 25 teams. Randy Shannon could be on the hot seat if the ‘Canes don’t step up to the plate this season. Full Preview: Miami 2009 NCAA Football Predictions
5.) Virginia Cavaliers – The Cavaliers have three good quarterbacks to choose from, and TB Mikell Simpson runs behind four returning offensive linemen. Their offensive skilled talent is still unproven, and the linebacking corps was gutted. If coach Al Groh turns new OC Gregg Brandon loose, the Cavs will be thinking bowl bid by season’s end. 6.) Duke Blue Devils – Re’quan Boyette’s return will help get the running game going, and QB Thaddeus Lewis slings can sling it with the best.
