2009 Atlanta Falcons Schedule
Written May 28, 2009 by InfoPlays
After a 4-12 campaign in 2007, the Atlanta Falcons pulled off one of the best turnarounds in NFL history by posting an 11-5 record in 2008 and earning a spot in the playoffs. It will be very tough for the Falcons to repeat that feat in 2009 as they are no longer a sleeper. Atlanta has a target on their backs heading into this season, but they still have plenty of talent to make a run at the playoffs. Odds makers have the Falcons projected to win 8 games this season, 3 less than a year ago. Let’s see if they can exceed expectations again in 2009 as I list their wins and losses for the upcoming season. See the NFL projected win totals for every team this year. Atlanta won’t be tested much to start the pre-season. They face the two worst teams in the league, starting with a road game at the Detroit Lions on August 15th. The Falcons then travel to St. Louis on August 21st to take on the Rams. Atlanta welcomes the San Diego Chargers to town on August 29th for their first pre-season home game. The Falcons cap off the pre-season with a September 3rd home meeting with the Baltimore Ravens. Get tickets to Atlanta Falcons games at StubHub.
Week 1 - Sunday, September 13th at home against the Miami Dolphins – Atlanta starts off the season with a “W” at home against the gritty Dolphins.
Week 2 - Sunday, September 20th at home against the Carolina Panthers – A huge NFC South clash early in the season, but the home team gets the nod in a tight one.
Week 3 - Sunday, September 27th at the New England Patriots – Atlanta takes a big hit to their confidence after a 2-0 start with a lopsided road setback in Foxboro.
Week 5 – Sunday, October 11th at the San Francisco 49ers – The 49ers hand the Falcons their second straight loss in the Bay Area. Atlanta will have to question their manhood here.
Week 6 - Sunday, October 18th at home against the Chicago Bears – The Falcons end a brief 2-game skid with a big home win over Jay Cutler and company.
Week 7 - Sunday, October 25th at the Dallas Cowboys – The Falcons don’t have what it takes to win in Big D this season.
Week 8 - Monday, November 2nd at the New Orleans Saints – New Orleans proves that they, along with Carolina, are the team to beat in the NFC South this season with a decisive home win on the big Monday night stage.
Week 9 – Sunday, November 8th at home against the Washington Redskins – Atlanta takes care of business at home against the Redskins to avoid a 3-game losing streak.
Week 10 - Sunday, November 15th at the Carolina Panthers – After a close loss early in the season to the Falcons, Carolina will have this game circled on their calendar and they’ll make a statement with a double-digit home victory.
Week 11 - Sunday, November 22nd at the New York Giants – Atlanta isn’t ready to beat one of the best teams in football on the road, the Giants roll at home.
Week 12 – Sunday, November 29th at home against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers – The Falcons put together their biggest blowout of the season with a home win against Tampa Bay to start a 3-game home stand.
Week 13 – Sunday, December 6th at home against the Philadelphia Eagles – The Eagles have too much offense, and Matt Ryan falters under the pressure of Philly’s fierce blitzing defense. The Eagles steal one on the road here.
Week 14 - Sunday, December 13th at home against the New Orleans Saints – Atlanta hands the Saints a crushing defeat late in the season in the Georgia Dome to hurt New Orleans’ playoff hopes.
Week 15 – Sunday, December 20th at the New York Jets – The cold weather up in New York gets to the Falcons as the Jets roll at home.
Week 16 - Sunday, December 27th at home against the Buffalo Bills – This will be a huge game for the Bills, but Buffalo is too young to win a big road game late in the season. Atlanta wins a close one.
Week 17 - Sunday, January 3rd at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers – Both the Bucs and Falcons should be eliminated from the playoffs at this point, so the edge goes to the home team in Tampa Bay.
I have the Falcons finishing 7-9 on the season in 2009, which is one win short of the projected win total for Atlanta. The odds makers expect the Falcons to win 8 games so I’ll be siding with the UNDER on my futures bet this year.

Got something to say?

We are turning back the clock and turning up the talent. Despite the name value of guys like Keith Brooking, Grady Jackson and Lawyer Milloy, they were past their prime and not in the team’s plans down the road.
In 2008, the team gave playing time to young guys like Curtis Lofton, Chevis Jackson, Kroy Biermann, Brent Grimes and Chris Houston. They gained valuable experience and the team managed to go 11-5 and made the playoffs, despite ranking the bottom third of the NFL statistically.
In 2009, all the above players are part of the Falcons’ plans for defensive success. In addition, the 2009 draft class was filled with defensive talent that could have the impact of the 2008 class. William Moore is a big-play safety that could be starting week 1, along with defensive tackle Peria Jerry, who dropped to Atlanta with the #24 pick. Chris Owens is a potential sleeper at cornerback, while Spencer Adkins and Lawrence Sidbury could be edge rushers and special teams’ stars.
In addition to all the 1st and 2nd year players on the defensive side of the ball, Stephen Nicholas, Trey Lewis and Thomas DeCloud are still developing and also bolster the roster.
All this youth alongside John Abraham, Mike Peterson and Erik Coleman could drastically improve a defense that only needs to be above-average for the Falcons to flourish. Matt Ryan and the offense don’t need a lot of help, but every game in 2008 was close leading to a lot of vital possessions in the 4th quarter. With all this “help” on D we WILL turn heads this season for sure!
