2009 Autism Speaks 400 Predictions

Written May 28, 2009 by Jason Lowry

autism-speaks-400This Sunday the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series heads North for the first time all season, as drivers gear up for the 2009 Autism Speaks 400 in Dover, Delaware. Dover International Speedway is a track like any other, because of its concrete track and high banking. Last week drivers had to do with a lot of rain at the Coca-Cola 600, but when it was all said and done David Reutimann grabbed his first ever win on the Sprint Cup Series. The defending champion here is Kyle Busch, who won on this track for the first time just last year. The guys you want to keep your eyes on our veterans Jeff Gordon and Mark Martin, as the two share the lead with most wins here at 4 a piece. With the race just a few days away, here is a look at the 3 drivers I feel have a great shot at winning the Autism Speaks 400 this weekend.

Carl Edwards +700 to win at Sportsbook.com: It has been a pretty slow start to the 2009 season for Edwards, as he comes in 11th in the point standings and has yet to finish higher than third this season. Even with the slow start Edwards is still one of the best drivers out there and its only a matter of time before he gets back in the winners circle. Edwards has been lights out on this track over his last 5 starts, as he hasn’t finished worse than 3rd in any of those starts. Edwards has not won this exact race, but has won on this track back in 2007. Edwards was runner-up here a year ago, so I got to believe he has a great shot at winning this thing this weekend. Another reason to like Edwards is he is coming off a solid 4th place finish last week at the Coca-Cola 600 and that could be a sign that he is ready to turn this season around.

Jeff Gordon +800 to win at Sportsbook.com: We have already mentioned the dominance Gordon has displayed here with 4 wins, but this guy has 14 career top 5 finishes on this track, so if consistency is what you want this guy is your man this weekend. Gordon is still the points leader this season, and is a absolute threat to win each and every week. The only concern with Gordon this weekend, is so much of his great racing on this course came back early in his career, as he only has three top 5 finishes in his last 10 starts here. The reason you have to like Gordon this time around, is the guy is driving like he is a kid again, and good very well be on his way to another amazing season. If you are looking for a safe and solid pick this weekend, then Gordon is your man.

Matt Kenseth +1000 to win at Sportsbook.com: Kenseth has struggled to get it going after back to back wins to start the season, but this is a guy that has really raced well here at Dover over the years. Kenseth has finished 5th or better in each of his last 3 starts here, including a 4th place finish at this event a year ago. Kenseth went on to grab a runner-up finish at this track later in the season last year.  This guy is coming off two straight top 10 finishes, and if you are looking for a driver with some good paying odds to win the race this Sunday, than I don’t think there is any reason to look anywhere else than the #17 car.

I think the smart money is still on Jeff Gordon.
