2009 Big 12 Football Predictions
Written June 23, 2009 by InfoPlays
Once again in 2009, the Big 12 South is much superior to the Big 12 North division. The four best teams in this conference may be in the South, with the likes of Texas, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Texas Tech. It should be an interesting race in both divisions, though, and highly competitive. There are talented QB’s all over the Big 12, with the likes of Colt McCoy, Sam Bradford, Zac Robinson and Todd Reesing leading the way. After the Sooners edged out the Longhorns last season despite losing to Texas heads-up due to playing a tougher schedule, let’s see if the folks from Austin can get some payback this year. A big part of the college football odds is futures betting. BetUS sportsbook lists their 2009 Big 12 Championship Odds where you can pick the team to win the conference title if you feel you have a good grasp on it.
Big 12 South
1.) Texas Longhorns – Quarterback Colt McCoy decided to come back, as did much of the offense. The Texas Longhorns are still looking for someone to step up at running back to the pressure off of their talented Heisman Trophy candidate. In a race that is nearly too close to call, we feel the motivational factor and the match will tilt in UT’s favor this season. Full Preview: Texas Football Predictions 2009
2.) Oklahoma Sooners – Heisman winner Sam Bradford came back, and the defensive front looks dominant. Replacing four offensive linemen and three of the top four receivers is a tall order for the Sooners. If they find some Texas-good blockers, and OU will play in its fifth national title game this decade. Full Preview:Â 2009 Oklahoma Football Predictions
3.) Oklahoma State Cowboys - The Cowboys have a wow factor in the trio of QB Zac Robinson, WR Dez Bryant and RB Kendall Hunter. Their defense still has so much to prove to pull OSU even with the South’s elite. If new D-coordinator Bill Young works some magic, the Cowboys will make it a three-horse race. 4.) Texas Tech Red Raiders - QB Taylor Potts appears poised to take over where Graham Harrell left off. The offsive departures get most of the attention in Lubbock, but a couple key losses on defense hurts, too. Mike Leach has shown the ability to retool quickly and keep the Red Raiders on the winning track. Full Preview: Texas Tech 2009 Football Predictions
5.) Baylor Bears - QB Robert Griffin’s skills will stress even the best defenses. The loss of key performers up front creates big questions on both lines. Griffin and overall team experience gives Baylor a chance to earn their first bowl big since 1994. Full Preview: 2009 Baylor College Football Predictions
6.) Texas A&M Aggies - The Aggies will certainly be more competitive than last year after going 0-5 against the South. A dramatic improvement on defense, where they ranked 114th nationally, is unrealistic. Mike Sherman is still a couple of recruiting classes away, but will everyone stay patient in Aggie country? Big 12 North
1.) Kansas Jayhawks - QB Todd Reesing gives KU stability that other North contenders lack. Losing all three starting LB’s leaves the Jayhawks with tackling questions. Reesing’s grittiness, and his supporting playmakers, boosts the Jayhawks to the North summit. Full Preview: Kansas College Football 2009 Predictions
2.) Nebraska Cornhuskers - A strong finish last season puts the Huskers in position to take the next step. Inexperience at QB and WR puts added pressure on their running game this season, though. If the defense improves as expected under Pelini, Nebraska has a chance to move to the top of the North. Full Preview: 2009 Nebraska Football Predictions
3.) Missouri Tigers - An above-average running game gives QB Blaine Gabbert time to develop. No Big 12 team has to replace as much talent as do the Tigers. A couple of understandable steps backward will be the result this season, but the Tigers are still respectable. Full Preview: Missouri NCAA Football Predictions 2009
4.) Colorado Buffaloes - The return of 10 starters on offense gives the Buffs a chance to be much improved here. Can Cody Hawkins or Tyler Hansen become productive Big 12 quarterbacks? Ever-optimistic coach Dan Hawkins says the Buffs are capable of winning 10 games, but we’ll have to politely disagree. Full Preview: Colorado 2009 Football Predictions
5.) Kansas State Wildcats - Bill Snyder’s return provides much need stability and enthusiasm in Manhattan. Even by North standards, the Wildcats fall short of needed speed and athleticism. Even Snyder knows it’s a long road ahead to turn this program around, so growing pains are expected this season. Full Preview: 2009 Kansas State Football Predictions
6.) Iowa State Cyclones - Iowa native Paul Rhoads is excited to take over this beleaguered program. Don’t expect sudden improvement from a defense that keeps springing leaks. A wide-open offense should at least make losing exciting this season. Full Preview: Iowa State 2009 Football Predictions

Got something to say?

This is Mike Sherman’s last year at Texas A&M: horrible recruiter, worse coach, pathetic motivator, unimpressive staff, can’t win home opener against Arkansas State, and will be in 5th or 6th place again in Big 12 South. 9 teams are projected to make bowls from the Big 12 … and Sherman’s team isn’t one of them. Bring on Jon Gruden to save this program!

You can’t even spell Iowa State head coach Paul Rhoads last name or QB Austen Arnaud’s first name right, makes me wonder about the rest of your homework.
