2009 Big East Football Predictions

Written June 29, 2009 by InfoPlays

2009 Big East Football PredictionsThe Big East finds itself without a clear-cut favorite this year. Whether that’s a good thing or a bad one for the conference depends on your vantage point. Nationally, the perception most likely will be that the Big East is down. But within the conference, it means hope. The kind that allowed the Cincinnati Bearcats to win the Big East title and earn the accompanying Orange Bowl bid a year ago. NCAA football odds at one of our featured sportsbooks will give you an idea of how the experts think this conference will play out. We’ll list our predictions below, but make sure and check out the Odds to Win the 2009 Big East Conference at BetUS Sportsbook.

1.) Rutgers Scarlet Knights – This is the year Greg Schiano and Rutgers break through to win the Big East title. The defense is the most dominant in the conference, and the offensive line returns 100% intact. These two units will lead the team as the Scarlet Knights have to replace QB Mike Teel and WR Kenny Britt, which won’t be easy. A solid running game will carry the offense early, though, allowing their quarterback to get his feet wet. Full Preview: Rutgers College Football Predictions 2009

2.) West Virginia Mountaineers – Explosive RB Noel Devine heads an offense brimming with potential. Four tough road games, including a meeting with Rutgers in their season finale, and the loss of Pat White will cost the Mountaineers dearly. A rise to the Top 25 is possible if WVU survives Auburn and Colorado early. Full Preview: West Virginia 2009 Football Predictions

3.) Cincinnati Bearcats – QB Tony Pike and WR Mardy Gilyard are clearly the league’s best at their positions. The defense is switching to a 3-4 this season, which is the perfect time for Kelly to do so considering he has to break in 10 new defensive starters. The Bearcats will take a step back this season, especially with the schedule. Full Preview: 2009 Cincinnati NCAA Football Predictions

4.) Pittsburgh Panthers – Dave Wannstedt just keeps stockpiling good, young talent. RB LeSean McCoy and LB Scott McKillop left some huge holes to fill. The season hinges on quarterback Bill Stull and finding a running back. Full Preview: Pittsburgh 2009 College Football Predictions

5.) South Florida Bulls – The Bulls have plenty of star power with QB Matt Grothe and DE George Selvie. But the running game is inconsistent and the offensive line requires a rebuild. USF is still looking for a season-long breakthrough, but they appear to be over-schedule this season. Full Preview: South Florida Football Predictions 2009

6.) Louisville Cardinals – Victor Anderson and Doug Beaumont give the offense promise. The QB situation is a mess in Louisville for the first time in a decade. Coach Kragthorpe might be on his way out if the Cardinals can’t at least muster a bowl big this season, so the motivation is there. Full Preview: Louisville 2009 NCAA Football Predictions

7.) UConn Huskies – New coordinator Joe Moorhead vows to spice up this vanilla offense. But the schedule is beefed up and start RB Donald Brown is gone. The rebuilding Huskies have the look of a .500 team in a best-case scenario. Full Preview: 2009 UConn College Football Predictions

8.) Syracuse Orange – New coach Doug Marrone brings a fresh outlook and high energy to the program. There’s still an alarming shortage of talent throughout the roster, though. The Orange can escape the Big East cellar if everything goes right, and eight home games should help their cause. Full Preview: Syracuse Football Predictions 2009
