2009 Big Ten Football Predictions

Written June 20, 2009 by InfoPlays

Big-Ten-Football-Predictions-2009The Big Ten appears to be more unpredictable in 2009 than it has been in recent memory. Ohio State and Penn State are the frontrunners to take down the conference championship, but after that things become a bit vague. Michigan State was the surprise team last year. Which squad will come out of nowhere this season? Find out below with our 2009 Big Ten football predictions as we list the order we feel teams will finish.

Check out the college football lines listed at one of our featured sportsbooks as BetUs lists their 2009 Big Ten Championship Odds.

1.) Ohio State Buckeyes – Nobody’s worried about lost talent with the Ohio State Buckeyes. The Buckeyes stock up with the best of ‘em. Clearly, the backfield will miss Beanie Wells badly, but you can tell the BCS to save a seat for the Buckeyes once again. Full Preview:  Ohio State Football Predictions 2009

2.) Penn State Nittany Lions – Sean Lee’s return means the Lions could have the country’s premier linebackers. The DL and secondary have gaping holes to fill, and a trio of terrific WR’s are gone. But you can watch out for Joe Paterno in front of a thick pack of Big Ten teams scuffling for second place. Full Preview:  2009 Penn State College Football Predictions

3.) Michigan State Spartans – Last year’s top defending in LB Greg Jones returns, and an underrated receiving corps is back. It will be very tough to replace last year’s top two offense stars in Hoyer and Ringer, though. This program still seems to be on the rise, and this year it could reach even higher. 4.) Illinois Fighting Illini – Juice Williams and Arrelious Benn are the Big Ten’s most dynamic offensive duo. The problem for Illinois is their back seven on defense, and opposing teams will exploit it. In the last year of a closing window, Illinois will treat its fan base to another exciting run. 5.) Wisconsin Badgers – The Badgers still have a power running attack this season with plenty of backs ready to break through into a new era. The front four must be rebuilt, and the quarterback cloud still looms over Madison. The schedule guarantees enough wins for a bowl, but will that be enough to keep fans off Bielema’s back? 6.) Iowa Hawkeyes – It’s no surprise the Hawkeyes own the conference’s best offensive line yet again under Kirk Ferentz. Shonn Greene’s departure will put a lot of pressure on Ricky Stanzi and the passing game. Unfortunately, the scheduling gods are not on the Hawkeyes’ side this season so it will be tough for Iowa to finish any higher than sixth in the conference. 7.) Michigan Wolverines – The defense is, once again, the strength of this team as it’s solid at all three levels. They should have a superb receiving corps on offense, but bringing on a true freshman QB is hardly ever a winning formula. The middle of the pack will not satisfy anybody in Ann Arbor, but it appears the Wolverines are headed that way. Full Preview:  2009 Michigan Football Predictions

8.) Northwestern Wildcats – Is there a better coach in the Big Ten than Pat Fitzgerald? Maybe, but there’s certainly nobody more passionate about his team. The offense must find replacements in the backfield and at wide receiver. The ‘Cats might manage to sneak into a bowl again. Full Preview:  Northwestern Football Predictions 2009

9.) Minnesota Golden Gophers – A new stadium on campus brings pride and excitement to Gopher country, and all-important revenue. But that new stadium won’t help Minnesota in October during road trips to Penn State and Ohio State. Tim Brewster is turning this ship around, but there is still much work to be done.  Full Preview:  2009 Minnesota Football Predictions

10.) Indiana Hoosiers – The defensive line boasts one of the best end tandems in the country to get after opposing QB’s. Without Kellen Lewis though, who is going to step up and make plays? There will be no bowl for Hoosier fans this year. It could be worse, but not much. Full Preview:  Indiana 2009 College Football Predictions

11.) Purdue Boilermakers – New coach Danny Hope was given a full year head start to settle into his new post. But considering the talent on hand, we’re not sure a decade would have been enough time. This is going to be unfamiliar territory for Purdue fans as they finish dead last in the conference in a rebuilding year. Full Preview:  2009 Purdue Football Predictions
