2009 Boise State Broncos NCAA Football Predictions

Written July 10, 2009 by Jason Lowry

Boise State Broncos 2009 PredictionsThe Boise State Broncos just keep on winning in WAC play, as they have piled up a 54-2 record in conference play since 2002, and are coming off their 2nd undefeated regular season in the last three years. The perfect season ended in the Poinsettia Bowl, as the Broncos fell to TCU in a heartbreaker 16-17. This year the Broncos have just 11 starters back, but with the way this school recruits and the domination it has displayed against the rest of the schools in this conference, I don’t see any reason why the Broncos can’t win this conference again in 2009.

Last year the Broncos struck gold with freshman quarterback Kellen Moore, as all Moore did in his freshman year was throw for 3,486 yards with 25 touchdowns to just 10 interceptions. Entering into his sophomore year Moore will have to find a couple new targets to throw the football two, as the top two receivers yardage wise are no longer with the team. The lone receiver back is junior Austin Pettis, and Pettis led the Broncos with 9 touchdown catches last year, and could be primed for a monster season with the majority of the balls coming his way. Sophomore Tyler Shoemaker and junior Titus Young are expected to jump into the starting lineup, and the Broncos also have a solid threat at tight end in sophomore Kyle Efaw. The Broncos also lost their leading rusher from 2008 in Ian Johnson, but shouldn’t experience much of a drop off with junior Jeremy Avery taking over the majority of the carries, as Avery ran for 614 yards and 4 scores last season. The offensive line is set from center to right tackle, but the Broncos have to fill both the left guard and left tackle spots. It looks as thought junior Matt Slater will take over at tackle, while sophomore Garrett Pendergast takes over at guard. Overall with Moore at quarterback I think the offense is set for at least a couple more years, and even with just 6 starters back I see this team continuing to put a bunch of points on the scoreboard. On defense the Broncos return only 5 starters from last season, and that means they will be counting on a lot of new faces to make an immediate impact this season. Up front the Broncos return junior defensive end Ryan Winterswyk, who led the Broncos with 4.5 sacks and 7 tackles for loss last season. It looks as though three sophomores will be joining Winterswyk on the line, as Billy Winn and Chase Baker are expected to start at tackle, while Byron Hout takes over at the other end spot. At linebacker two more sophomores are expected to join the starting lineup, as Aaron Tevis and Hunter White look to have the early edge at the two open outside backer spots. The Broncos do return junior middle linebacker Derrell Acrey, and the Broncos are expecting a big season from this kid. The secondary looks to be the surest thing with three returning starters back, as junior Brandyn Thompson and senior Kyle Wilson will once again hold down the two corner spots, and junior Jeron Johnson returns at strong safety. Joining Johnson is yet another sophomore in free safety George Iloka. This is a very young unit but it doesn’t look like there will be a huge drop off in talent. If the Broncos played in a tougher conference this might be more of a problem, but I expect this unit to do just fine against the rest of the WAC this season. My 2009 Prediction: 1st in WAC. I don’t think this will come as a surprise to anyone that follows college football. The Broncos will get tested early with a road game against Fresno State on Sep. 18, but I think the biggest test in WAC play this season likely won’t come till the 2nd to last game of the season when they host the Nevada Wolf Pack on Nov. 27.

Re: Boise State – Soph Thomas Byrd is the center. The sophmore TE you are referring to is local product Kyle Efaw. Thanks and keep up the good work.
