2009 Bowling Green Football Predictions
Written July 15, 2009 by InfoPlays
There is enough talent on this Bowling Green Falcons team to compete for a division championship. That is, of course, if they can get through Troy, Boise State and Missouri bandaged after a brutal early schedule. This team won three out of its last four games in 2008, with the only blemish an overtime loss to MAC champion Buffalo. They posted 25-and-28-point road wins at Ohio and Toledo, respectively, so the Falcons hope to carry that late-season momentum into early 2009 success. Offense: Tyler Sheehan has been the one constant of this Bowling Green offense as he enters his third season under center. But it will be his first under new head coach Dave Clawson’s system. He’s used to running a high-percentage, high-frequency passing game. Clawson won’t take the ball out of his hands, but more balance is the ultimate goal. A tight end and a fullback will be part of the base offense this season. Sheehan has NFL size and a career completion percentage of 64.5 with 43 touchdown passes in 25 starts. Freddie Barnes and his 143 career catches will remain in his running/receiving role. Fifth-year senior Calvin Wiley was a non-factor last season with a knee injury, but he was back in time for spring drills to compete for a starting receiver spot.
Tight end Jimmy Scheidler poses as a deadly red zone target, catching seven touchdowns passes despite having only 17 grabs in all of ‘08. But none of the other returning receivers had more than one touchdown grab. The running back position is up for grabs, but Clawson hopes for two or three starting-caliber backs. Sheehan had the most carries on the team with 105 last season. Chris Bullock had 92 carries a year ago, and he ended the offseason with a two-TD spring game. After being unreliable in the lead role last year, he’ll have to try and hold off junior Willie Geter. The line is set on the left side with veterans Shane Steffy and Brady Minturn, and center Ben Bojicic returns after starting his freshman year. But a whole new right side of the line will need to step up.

Defense: Freshmen won’t need to carry this defense, but Clawson didn’t hesitate to tell his incoming class to prepare for some heavy lifting. He feels that a freshman needs to contribute on every level of the defense. Cornerback Robert Lorenzi wasn’t available in the spring after recovering from a broken leg suffered last August, but he could be one freshman who contributes this fall. Defensive tackle Michael Ream had the potential to start as a freshman, but he’s been kicked off the team.
The Falcons’ top cornerbacks both graduated. Safeties P.J. Mahone and Jahmal Brown are the stars of the defense. The linebacking corps has starting experience with Jerett Sanderson, Cody Basler and James Schneider. Schneider was a junior college transfer last season, and he caught Clawson’s eye more than anyone in spring practice. Mohne had 95 tackles to lead the Falcons in ‘08, with Brown finishing third on the team with 83 stops. The defensive line is the story to watch in fall camp. So far, only Nick Torresso and Angelo Magnone are sure things from a unit that is sure to see freshmen on the field.
