2009 Byron Nelson Championship Predictions

Written May 19, 2009 by Jason Lowry

byron-nelson-golfThere was once so much promise for Adam Scott, and it looked like maybe he would get it going in 2009 after his runner up finish at the Sony Open, but it has all been downhill from there. Scott has failed to make a cut in his last 5 starts, and this week he will try and break that streak when he attempts to defend his title at the Byron Nelson Championship. To his credit Scott has battled some injuries, but if the injuries are causing him to play this bad maybe he should just take a nice break and get his body and mind back where it should be. While Scott will unlikely be a threat to do much this weekend at TPC Four Seasons Resort, there are a number of golfers who are playing some very good golf that will have a great shot at winning this thing. Here is a look at the 3 golfers I feel have the best shot at winning the Byron Nelson Championship this weekend.

Ian Poulter +1500 to win at Sportsbook.com: Though Poulter has not won this year, he is really starting to come alive. Poulter has got better each week since finishing tied for 20th at the Masters. He then went on to finish 13th at the Zurich Class, then a solid 5th place finish at the Quail Hollow Championship, and then runner up at the Players Championship just a couple of weeks ago. Poulter has played well here finished tied for 3rd in 2007, and I really feel like he has a great shot at winning this weekend. Poulter is the best scrambler on Tour, as he is able to get up and down nearly 75% of the time. If you are looking for a good pick to win this weekend, Poulter is a great option and should be right in the thick of things come Sunday.

Phil Mickelson +800 to win at Sportsbook.com: I really like the way Mickelson has been playing of late, but I just like Poulter a little more, even though Mickelson is the odds on favorite to win this tournament. Mickelson had a tough showing at the Players Championship finishing tied for 55th, but this is a guy who has finished in the top 5 four times since winning the Northern Trust Open back in the middle of February. Mickelson has played well here at the Byron Nelson before, but hasn’t won this event since way back in 1996. If Phil gets it going early, he has a great shot at coming out on top Sunday afternoon.

Vijay Singh +2500 to win at Sportsbook.com: Here is a guy who has had to battle some injuries to start the 2009 season, and he just might be ready to return to the form of old. Singh had his best finish of the season in his last start, finishing tied for 9th at the Players Championship. Singh’s swing isn’t all that bad, but he needs to find that touch around the greens, as he is currently 183rd in putts per round. Singh has also been poor in the scrambling department, coming in ranked 170th. Singh did win this tournament back in 2003, and if he can get it going like he did at the Players Championship, I feel he has a pretty good shot at sneaking into the top 10 this weekend, and having a shot to win this thing.
