2009 Cleveland Cavaliers NBA Finals Betting Odds

Written April 16, 2009 by Jason Lowry

cavs-basketballCould this be the year LeBron James puts his official stamp on the NBA and walks away with his first NBA Title? So far it looks like that could very well be the case, as the Cavaliers are not only the No.1 seed in the Eastern Conference, they are the top seed in the whole NBA, which means they have home court advantage throughout the entire playoffs. The Cavaliers would have tied the NBA record for the best regular season home record, but failed to win their final game at home with James and many other starters not even suiting up. The Cavs are set to take on the Detroit Pistons in the first round of the playoffs, and what use to be a tough out for the Cavs could very easily turn into a sweep, as the Pistons have never been the same after the trade of Chauncey Billups for Allen Iverson. With first round action just a few days away, here is a quick look at why I think the Cavs will and won’t win the NBA Title in 2009.

Why They Will Win It All: There is really no secret to this one, as the Cavaliers are nothing without LeBron James, but as years past have proven LeBron can’t do it all on his own. To help Jams out the Cavs picked up Mo Williams, and his addition the team has been nothing but success. The fact that this team was able to earn home court throughout the playoffs should be huge for this team, as they will need it if they end up facing the Lakers in the Finals. The Cavs are coming into the playoffs full strength, as they spent parts of the season without their big man Zydrunas Ilgauskas and guard Delonte West, plus I really like the addition of Joe Smith and what he can bring to this team off the bench. Not putting anything against the Cavs, but they did get a little lucky that both the Magic and Celtics were hurt with devastating injuries, as the Magic lost their starting point guard Jameer Nelson and the Celtics lost their heart and soul in Kevin Garnett. The Magic will remain without Nelson in the playoffs and their depth at the point guard position will likely be their downfall this postseason and its hard to imagine Garnett coming back and playing like he did last year in the playoffs. So pretty much that leaves the Cavs taking on whoever makes it out of the West, and if they can win all 4 games at home they will be your 2009 NBA Champions. Why They Won’t Win It All:  While it would be quick and easy to point out that the Eastern Conference is no where near as competitive as the Western Conference, the Cavs were an outstanding 26-4 against the Western Conference this season, so you can pretty much through that out the window, but two of those four losses came against the Los Angeles Lakers, the best team in the Western Conference, and the only team to really beat the Cavs at home this season. Besides the Lakers standing in their way, there is no guarantee that Cavs can get by the Celtics in the Eastern Conference, as no one knows how Garnett will be able to play. Finally James could be the teams worst nightmare if he gets to be to unselfish, and the verdict is still out on just how good James is at winning the game in the final seconds. I like the Cavs chances of making it to the Finals this year, but I am not sold on them being able to get by the Lakers or any other team out of the Western Conference.
