Cleveland Browns Predictions 2009

Written June 19, 2009 by Nick Scarpa

cleveland-browns-2009-previewNew Browns skipper Eric Mangini had some mixed reviews as the New York Jets head coach so the jury is out on the former Bill Belichick protégé. Posting a poor 4-12 season got Romeo Crennel fired and Mangini is hoping he can return the Browns back to their playoff form from 2007 when they went 11-5. Mangini has been determined to bring in high-effort, high character players to build his team around. The other major question heading into the season is who will be the starting QB? Brady Quinn has been the face of the franchise since being drafted but overall Derek Anderson has played better.  According to the NFL lines for the upcoming season, the Browns are listed at +7000 to win Super Bowl XLIV.

The Cleveland Browns are a running team and the duties will be handled by freight train Jamal Lewis and Jerome Harrison . Lewis and Harrison will have the benefit of running behind a smashing blocker in fullback Lawrence Vickers who is one of the best blocking backs in the NFL. Also a dangerous “slash” weapon is Joshua Cribbs who is an explosive player on reverses. Brady Quinn has been the face of the Cleveland franchise since he was drafted in 2007 but Anderson has the better arm, more experience and better pocket presence. Brady Quinn has more mobility but has shown below-average poise and accuracy. The Browns will have a tough decision to make at QB in the preseason. The receiver position has been addressed in the off-season through the draft and free-agency with the losses of star TE Kellen Winslow Jr. and the likely absence of starter Donte Stallworth (DUI-manslaughter charges). WR Braylon Edwards is an all-pro caliber talent that could be regarded as one of the best in the NFL and is the Browns most dangerous weapon on offense. Draft picks WR Brian Robiskie and WR Mohamed Massaquoi also could fill the void left by Winslow.

Cleveland’s defense was among one of the NFL’s worst units in the league and defensive minded head coach Eric Mangini is not likely to have much patience with mediocrity. The defensive line underachieved last season despite having a road-grader in the middle with 350 Lb. Nose Tackle Shaun Rodgers. The Browns are hoping the addition of DE Kenyon Coleman will help a Browns defensive unit that was 28th in the NFL against the run. The linebacking unit has some a nice mix of young talent and solid vets with some upgrades made in the off-season. OLB Kamerion Wimberly is an athlete that has pass-rushing upside and could make an impact and D’Qwell Jackson is a sure tackler. The secondary was also bolstered with some ex-Jets brought in by Mangini but still looks very ordinary with a lack of playmakers. The Special Teams crew is strong with a star kicker in Phil Dawson, a game-breaking return threat in Josh Cribbs and a booming punter in Dave Zastudill (45.5 yards per punt.

Look for Cleveland to get washed away in AFC North this season without a top-caliber QB and a defense that needs a talent infusion. Mangini is likely to have much of the same results as Romeo Crennell in his first year as the Browns head coach.

We will see you in the fall when you can get great NFL picks all season long.  You won’t find a better selection of free NFL picks anywhere in the world!

Like most analysts, you look at stats/standings from the prior year and make pie in the sky (in the cellar, in this case) predictions. The reasons for the dismal performance in 2008, were mainly injuries. Anderson proved to lack staying power, and Quinn only had 3 games, but DID show promise. When the 4th string QB came in, the reporting world thought this was indicative of our team. If the same would have happened to Pukesburgh, the results would be similar. Mangini does have a handle on this team, and it WILL perform better. Like all of the talking heads on TV, your basis of statement is superficial, at best. BTW, Cleveland went 10-6 in 2007.
