2009 Coca-Cola 600 Predictions
Written May 21, 2009 by Jason Lowry
After a fun an exciting weekend at the Sprint Cup All-Star Race, where Tony Stewart grabbed his first win of the season, NASCAR gears up for the 2009 running of the Coca-Cola 600. There won’t be any travel needed this week, as the race stays at Lowe’s Motor Speedway for the second straight week. The race is scheduled to get underway Sunday afternoon, but making things a little more difficult is this race won’t finish up till its dark. Last year it was Kasey Kahne who stole the spotlight and took home the checkered flag for the 2nd time in 3 years at this event. Besides the race falling on Memorial Day weekend, it also happens to fall on the same day as the Indianapolis 500. It should be a great day for racing, and here is a look at the 3 drivers I think have the best shot at winning the Coca-Cola 600.
Jimmie Johnson +400 to win at Sportsbook.com: This is a track the Johnson has raced very well on, with 5 career wins, including 3 at this event. Johnson actually won all three of his races here consecutively from 2003-2005. Johnson had engine problems here a year ago and that caused him to finish 39th, but he did rebound to finish 6th on this track later in the season. Johnson didn’t fair well last week at the Sprint Cup All-Star Race, but that really doesn’t mean a lot when it comes to racing at the Coca-Cola 600, as drivers will return to there more conservative approaches. The only thing that could stop Johnson this week is Jeff Gordon, who also has 3 wins at this track, including his first ever back in 1994. If you are looking for a solid driver to win this weekend, then there is no question that Johnson is the guy you are looking for.
Tony Stewart +600 to win at Sportsbook.com: Six times the winner of the All-Star race has went on to win the Coca-Cola 500, so you have to think that Stewart has a pretty good shot at racing well this weekend, and possibly taking home the checkered flag for a second straight week. Stewart comes in 2nd in the point standings, and a win could put him at the top this weekend. The only problem I see is Stewart has not won this event in his career, so there has to be some concern there, but as well as this guy is racing this season I think he has a great shot at winning. I believe if you are counting on someone being right around the top 5 with a chance to make a move for the lead late, Stewart is a solid pick this weekend.
Matt Kenseth +15000 to win at Sportsbook.com: After a great start to the 2009 season, winning the first two races, Kenseth has really struggled to get it going. Kenseth has just 2 top 10 finishes since the two wins, but I have a good feeling this guy is going to race well this Sunday. Kenseth won this event back in 2000, and has had a number of top 10 finishes on this track. If you are looking for a driver with great betting value, take the #17 car.
