2009 Coke Zero 400 Predictions
Written July 2, 2009 by Jason Lowry
There are a number of ways to spend your Fourth of July weekend, but if racing is what you love, there is no better place to be on Saturday night than Daytona International Speedway for the 2009 Coke Zero 400. While it might not have the same name as the past, this race is remembered by many as the firecracker 400. Last year it was Kyle Busch who came away with the checkered flag at this race, but there will also be a lot of attention surrounding Matt Kenseth who will look for a clean sweep at Daytona after his impressive win at the Daytona 500 earlier this season. Last week Joey Logano became the youngest winner in Sprint Cup history, as the 19-year-old came away with the win at rain shortened Industrial Tools 301, and what a story if he make it to in a row with a win at Daytona. With just a couple of days till the race gets underway, here are my three drivers that I feel have a great shot at coming away with a win this weekend.
Kyle Busch +600 to win at Sportsbook.com: Busch has really raced well at Daytona over the last couple of years, as there are many that believe he would have been the winner of the Daytona 500 this year had it not been for Earnhardt Jr. ending his day early. Busch has really raced well at this particular event as well, as he finished 2nd in both 2006 and 2007 before winning this event last season. Busch finally got back into the top 10 last week, after four straight races finishing worse than 13th. There are a lot of guys that have a great shot at winning this race, but I don’t think there is anyone stopping Busch this weekend.
Tony Stewart +800 to win at Sportsbook.com: The one guy that could get in the way of Busch this weekend, is the points leader Tony Stewart, who continues to bring it each and every race, as this guy has finished in the top seven 10 out of the last 12 races. Stewart is also no stranger to Daytona, as he has not only put together back to back solid finishes at the Daytona 500, but Stewart is a two time winner of this race. Stewart won here in consecutive years in 2005 and 2006, and with the way this guy is racing in 2009, I don’t see any reason to think he will finish any worse than 3rd this Saturday night.
Dale Earnhardt Jr. +1200 to win at Sportsbook.com: What a disappointing season it has been for Earnhardt this year, but I am not completely ready to count this guy out, not yet anyway. Earnhardt started to show some signs that maybe him and new crew chief Lance McGrew have got things going in the right direction after a pretty solid run last week, where he finished 13th. Another reason to like Earnhardt this weekend, is this guy has really raced well at Daytona over his career, including a win here at this race back in 2001. I think the time is now for Earnhardt if he wants any shot at making an incredible comeback into the top 12, plus you get some pretty good betting odds for Jr. to win this weekend.
