2009 Colorado State Rams NCAA Football Predictions
Written July 28, 2009 by Jason Lowry
Last year the Colorado State Rams surprised some teams after finishing up the season at 4-4 in the Mountain West Conference, and then topped of their season with a win over Fresno State in the New Mexico Bowl to push their final record to 7-6. This year the Rams bring back just 12 starters, but there are plenty that think second year coach Steve Fairchild can lead this team to another postseason appearance.
The Rams will have to find a way to replace their top quarterback and the 2008 MWC leading rusher Gartrell Johnson III. It looks as though the Rams are going to go with senior Grant Stucker at quarterback, who can also move the chains with his legs. At running back the Rams are hoping that junior John Mosure and junior college transfer Leonard Mason can find a way to come close to the 1,476 yards and 12 touchdowns Johnson put up last season. At wide receiver the Rams have two very talented players in seniors Rashaun Greer and Dion Morton, who combined for 114 catches for 1,973 yards and 13 scores. The team is also high on former quarterback TJ Borcky, as he continues to improve at his new position. The Rams should be much improved on the offensive line, as they return 4 starters from the 2008 season, led by two of the top guards in the conference in seniors Adrian Martinez and Shelley Smith. While there is some great talent on this side of the football, I think there are going to be some struggles with a new quarterback running the show. Bet the Rams this season at Sportsbook.com.

The Rams also have some holes on the defensive side of things, as they lose 5 starters from their 2008 front 7. The only starter back on the line, is senior defensive tackle James Morehead, and he started just 5 games last year. It looks like junior Guy Miller will join Morehead in the middle, while junior Cory Macon and senior Sam Stewart look to take over at the two defensive end spots. The Rams are going to be very young at linebacker this season, as they return sophomore Mychal Sisson, and plan on starting sophomore Luke Diehl and redshirt freshman Chris Gipson at the other two spots. In the secondary the Rams easily have the most talent coming back, as they only have to find a new starter at free safety. It looks as though it will be sophomore Elijah-Blu Smith stepping in at the open spot alongside senior strong safety Klint Kubiak. I think this unit will take a big hit in 2009, as its hard to replace that much talent up front. Bet the Mountain West Conference this season at Sportsbook.com.
My 2009 Prediction: 6th in MWC (3-5) Overall (5-7)
I think the Rams will really struggle to get it going this season, as they not only have to replace two very important positions on offense, but have little to nothing back on the front 7 on defense, and that just isn’t a very good recipe for success. I think the Rams will still be able to hold their own against Wyoming and New Mexico, but will likely need to beat either San Diego State or Air Force at home to get to three wins in the MWC.
