2009 Dallas Cowboys NFL Season Predictions
Written June 15, 2009 by Jason Lowry
It was yet another disappointing season for the Dallas Cowboys, as they went from Super Bowl favorites to a team that didn’t even make the playoffs. The Cowboys did finish the season with a winning record of 9-7, but really let down the fans in their 44-6 loss in the final game of the season against the Philadelphia Eagles, where a win would have put this team in the playoffs. Many thought that head coach Wade Phillips was going to be done as the team’s head coach, but owner Jerry Jones is giving him one more shot to prove he is worthy of his duties. With a new season at hand and plenty of talent at their disposal, the Cowboys feel 2009 could be the season that erases the disappointments of years past.
The biggest move the Cowboys made this offseason was letting go of Pro Bowl receiver Terrell Owens, who seemed to once again outstay his welcome with yet another franchise. The Cowboys also sent troubled Adam Jones and Tank Johnson on their way as well, as the team is trying to get rid of the attitudes and form a more collective group in the locker room. There is still talks that Jones will return to the team, but thats only cause the team is thin at the corner position. The Cowboys also got rid of Pro Bowl safety Roy Williams, but quickly signed former Jaguar safety Gerald Sensabaugh to fill the void. The Cowboys also picked up two other new starters on defense in defensive end Igor Olshansky and linebacker Keith Brookings. The Cowboys had 12 picks in this year’s draft, but because of the trade for Roy Williams midseason last year, the Cowboys didn’t have a pick until the third round, and it’s unlikely any player sees much action in 2009.

The offense will definitely have a much different look without Owens on the field, but it’s not as if this team doesn’t have the weapons to make up for Owens departure. It is time for quarterback Tony Romo to prove that he is an elite quarterback in this league, but that could mean handing the ball off more to Marion Barner and second year sensation Felix Jones. Romo still has weapons in the passing game, as Roy Williams and Patrick Crayton should form a pretty solid 1-2 punch, but don’t be shocked if Miles Austin emerges into a star this season as the No.3 receiver. On top of that Romo has one of the top tight ends in the game in Jason Witten, and an emerging youngster in tight end Martellus Bennett to throw the football to in the redzone. The offensive line has its question marks heading into the 2009 season, as there are plenty of worries about the declining play of left tackle Flozell Adams and the health of left guard Kyle Kosier, who missed most of last season with a foot injury. The rest of the line is pretty solid, especially in the middle with Pro Bowl center Andre Gurode and Pro Bowl right guard Leonard Davis. With less attention being forced upon TO getting the ball enough, I like the Cowboys offense to really surprise teams in 2009. Bet the Cowboys +300 to win the NFC East at Sportsbook.com.
The defense was hit or miss in 2009 but there is hope that this unit will be better as long as few guys can return from injury and the new faces can step in and learn the system without any problems. Up front the Cowboys seem pretty solid on the defensive line. Former seventh round pick Jay Ratliff turned in a Pro Bowl season at defensive tackle last season with 7.5 sacks, and should be a mainstay on this line for years to come. At defensive end free agent pickup Olshansky will team up with Marcus Spears to sure up the front 3, but where this team looks to be really good is at linebacker. The Cowboys arguably have the best defensive player in the game today in outside linebacker DeMarcus Ware, who had 20 sacks in 2008. Surrounding Ware is free agent pickup Brookings and Bradie James on the inside and Anthony Spencer takes over at the other outside spot in place of Greg Ellis, who was cut just at the beginning of June. The secondary has some concerns as the team needs star corner Terence Newman to stay healthy, as they are already counting on second year corner Mike Jenkins to take over opposite of Newman. I like the safety duo of Ken Hamlin and Sensabaugh for the Cowboys, but again the team is very thin in the secondary, and can’t afford any of these guys to go down early with an injury. My Prediction: 2nd NFC East (10-6) I don’t think the Cowboys will have enough to win the division in 2009, but I feel like they will have a good enough record to secure one of the wild card spots in the NFC. I also think the Cowboys win their first round playoff game, but I see another disappointing finish with a loss in the 2nd round to the either the Atlanta Falcons or Philadelphia Eagles.
