2009 Crown Plaza Invitational Predictions
Written May 26, 2009 by Jason Lowry
This week the PGA Tour stays in Texas for the third and final week, as many golfers get ready to take aim at the 2009 Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas. Last year Phil Mickelson took home the trophy, but will be unable to defend his title, as he continues to take time off from his wife’s recent discovery of breast cancer. There will be 8 prior champions of this event in full swing this week, including 2007 winner and the winner of this past weekends Byron Nelson Classic Rory Sabbatini and two-time winner Kenny Perry. Also in action will be FedEx Cup points leader Zach Johnson, and the guy trying to catch him in second Geoff Ogilvy. With the tournament scheduled to get underway in just a couple days, here is a look at the 3 golfers I feel have the best shot at winning this tournament.
Kenny Perry: After winning three times on Tour last year, Perry has already grabbed a win this season at the FBR Open. After finishing tied for 2nd at the Masters, Perry has been a little off finishing tied for 59th at the Zurich Classic and tied for 22nd at the Players Championship, but the way he has played over the last two years you can’t count this guy out at any event. Perry won this event in 2003 and 2005, but thats not all Perry has done on this course, as he has the record for lowest total four round score at 261 (-19), a task he accomplished in both years he won. Perry is solid off the tee, as he comes in 39th in distance and 57th in accuracy, and is great at getting the ball on the green in regulation (10th). The thing Perry struggles with is the putter at times, and when he gets that going he is one of the best golfers on Tour. Bet Perry to win the Crown Plaza at Sportsbook.com.
Geoff Ogilvy: Ogilvy might not be winning tournaments like he did to start the 2009 season, but he has finished in the top 10 six times this season. Ogilvy hasn’t teed it up since the Players Championship where he finished tied for 22nd, but this guy still leads the PGA Tour in birdies per round, and is second in putting per hole. Where Ogilvy gets himself in trouble is off the tee, as he is 163rd in driving accuracy, and when he is hitting the driver well he is hard to beat. Another reason to like Ogilvy is he has played well here last year finishing tied for 7th. Bet Ogilvy to win the Crown Plaza at Sportsbook.com.
Paul Casey: I actually would probably have Casey higher on this list, if this wasn’t his first start here at Colonial, but with the way this guy has played this season I would not be surprised if he came in and won this event. Casey spends time on both the European and PGA Tour, but has been outstanding on the PGA Tour this season, finishing 20th or better in five of his six starts. Casey won the Shell Houston Open earlier this season, but his best finish of late was his tie for 14th back at the Players Championship. If you are looking for a near lock to have a chance to win this thing come Sunday, then take Casey as your main man this weekend. Bet Casey to win the Crown Plaza at Sportsbook.com.
