2009 Daytona 500 Odds
Written February 10, 2009 by Jason Lowry

The Daytona 500 is the biggest race of the NASCAR season, but unlike so many other sports who finish up the season with their best game or series, NASCAR opens it season with its main attraction. Last year Ryan Newman took home the checkered flag, but repeating is no easy accomplishment as it has only been done 3 times since the race was first ran back in 1959, with Sterling Martin being the last to do so back in 1994 and 1995. To get you going on the race that is scheduled to get underway this Sunday at Daytona International Speedway, here is a look at the field broke down by the favorites, guys in the middle of the pack, and the long shots we think have a shot at winning the race.
Favorites: Kyle Busch +500, Dale Earnhardt Jr +700, Jeff Gordon +800, and Jimmie Johnson +800
The last two years we have got a couple surprises with Kevin Harvick and Ryan Newman beating the guys we consider the best in the business. Everyone on this list but Busch has won this race since 2004, and with the way Busch ran last season winning what seemed like every race, you have to think he will be right in the thick of things.
Middle of the Pack: Carl Edwards +1200, Mark Martin +1200, Tony Stewart +1500, Denny Hamlin +1500, Kurt Busch +1500, and Kevin Harvick +1800
The story of this group is unquestionably Tony Stewart, as this guy is no longer part of Joe Gibbs Racing and now drives the #14 car. Stewart has not won the Daytona 500, so you know he wants this one badily. We also think you should keep a close eye on both Carl Edwards and Kevin Harvick, as we think both could walk away with a win this weekend.
Long Shots: David Ragan +2500, Matt Kenseth +2500, Martin Truex Jr +2500, Jamie McMuray +2500, Greg Biffle +3000, Ryan Newman +3000, Jeff Burton +3000, and Kasey Kahne +4000
It gets a little harder to pick a guy out of this group, as the chances just aren’t good that one of these guys wins this race, but you can see how much respect Newman is getting after he pulled off the upset last season. Personally, we like both Kenseth and Kahne for this race, and think they could pull off the big shocker.
