2009 Detroit Lions Schedule
Written May 27, 2009 by Black Widow
After an 0-16 campaign in 2008, things can only get better for the Detroit Lions right? Well the odds makers have projected the Lions to win 5 games this season so they feel things are at least looking up. With a new coaching staff and new personnel all over the field, will Detroit be able to overcome 5 wins? Running Back Kevin Smith believes so after guaranteeing the Lions would make the playoffs this season. That might be a stretch to say the least, but let’s see how we have the Lions faring in 2009. The Detroit Lions kick off their preseason schedule with a home game on August 15th against the Atlanta Falcons. They travel to Cleveland to take on the Browns a week later on August 22nd. Then the Lions host the Indianapolis Colts on August 29th at Ford Field, followed by a road finale at the Buffalo Bills on September 3rd. Looking for Detroit Lions tickets for the 2009 season? StubHub has you covered!
Week 1 – Sunday, September 13th at the New Orleans Saints – Too much offense here for the Detroit Lions to compete. This won’t be the start Detroit is looking for with a blowout road loss.
Week 2 – Sunday, September 20th at home against the Minnesota Vikings – This soft Lions’ defense won’t be ready to stop Adrian Peterson and company just yet, despite playing the Vikings tough last season. Minnesota wins a close one.
Week 3 – Sunday, September 27th at home against the Washington Redskins – Finally, the Detroit Lions end an 18-game losing streak dating back to last season with a big home win against the Redskins. Washington’s lackluster offense won’t put up enough points to put away the Lions.
Week 4 – Sunday, October 4th at the Chicago Bears – The Lions come in with confidence after their first win of the season, but Jay Cutler and company get the job done at Soldier Field in perhaps a closer game than the odds makers expect.
Week 5 – Sunday, October 11th at home against the Pittsburgh Steelers – The Lions take a big hit to their confidence as Big Ben and the defending champs control this game from start to finish.
Week 6 - Sunday, October 18th at the Green Bay Packers – The Lions have not fared well at Lambeau in the past, and I don’t see that changing this season.
Week 8 – Sunday, November 1st at home against the St. Louis Rams – Finally a very winnable game for the Lions and they take advantage. This battle between two bottom feeders will be won by the home squad.
Week 9 – Sunday, November 8th at the Seattle Seahawks – Two bad teams square off again here, but the Seattle Seahawks won’t be falling to the Detroit Lions at one of the best home venues in the league.
Week 10 – Sunday, November 15th at the Minnesota Vikings – The Lions continue to compete with Minnesota, but they still don’t have what it takes to win in the 4th quarter with a young team. The Vikings win.
Week 11 – Sunday, November 22nd at home against the Cleveland Browns – This game will be listed somewhere around a pick ‘em, but once again I’m siding with the home team to get the victory.
Week 12 – Thursday, November 26th at home against the Green Bay Packers – The Lions regain their Thanksgiving Day magic with their biggest win of the season and celebrate by eating Turkey Legs at game’s end, one of which will be handed out to Kevin Smith.
Week 13 – Sunday, December 6th at the Cincinnati Bengals – A quick end to a brief 2-game winning streak for Detroit here as the Bengals take care of business at home.
Week 14 – Sunday, December 13th at the Baltimore Ravens – One of the worst blowout losses of the season is in store for the Lions in Baltimore as the Ravens clamp down defensively and force several Detroit turnovers in a rout.
Week 15 – Sunday, December 20th at home against the Arizona Cardinals – The Cards will be a slight favorite here and we’ll back them in a shootout.
Week 16 – Sunday, December 27th at the San Francisco 49ers – Potentially huge game for the 49ers here as they look for a win to inch closer to a playoff berth. San Fran doesn’t let this opportunity go to waste.
Week 17 – Sunday, January 3rd at home against the Chicago Bears – At this point, the Lions will only be trying to play the role of the spoiler and that won’t be motivation enough to beat the Bears. They hang tough, but lose a close one.
I have the 2009 Detroit Lions finishing UNDER the projected win total of 5 victories this season. They will notch 4 wins on the season, and perhaps sneak out a 5th, but I don’t see any way they finish with 6 wins or more after last year’s 0-16 performance.
