2009 Eastern Michigan Eagles NCAA Football Predictions
Written July 2, 2009 by Jason Lowry
The Eastern Michigan Eagles suffered another losing season in 2008, as the Eagles finished just 2-6 in the Mid-American Conference and 3-9 overall. In comes Ron English to take over this football program as the new head coach, and he inherits a bunch of starters coming back in 2009, as the Eagles have 17 returning starters.
On offense the Eagles should be able to keep up with pretty much every other team in this conference, as they return 9 starters to a unit that scored 26 points a game and gained over 415 yards a game. The Eagles have one of the top rated quarterbacks in the MAC this year in senior Andy Schmitt, who really shined on a bad team last year throwing for 2,644 yards and 15 touchdowns to just 8 interceptions. Also back are the top two runners from last season in senior Terrence Blevins and junior Dwayne Priest. Blevins had the majority of the carries and led the team with 575 yards and 12 scores, but Priest wasn’t to far behind, as he had 474 yards and 5 scores. It should also be noted that Schmitt is a party of the running game as well, as the quarterback added 171 yards and 5 scores on the ground. The Eagles return their leading receiver from last year in senior Jacory Stone, who had a team best 88 catches for 943 yards to go along with 3 touchdowns, but they will have to replace the production of Tyler Jones, who had a team best 6 touchdown grabs last season. Sophomore Marvon Sanders also returns on the outside, and he should improve off his freshman numbers of 28 catches for 253 yards and a score. The Eagles also have a very solid threat at the tight end position, as junior Josh LeDuc looks to improve off of his 32 catch and 4 touchdown performance from last season. The offensive line has just one spot to replace at right tackle, and it looks as though junior Dan DeMaster has the early edge on the open position. Overall the offense should have no problem putting points on the board this season, but the question will be can they score more than their defense gives up. The defense was not good at all last season, as they gave up nearly 40 points a game, and over 440 yards of total offense each game. The Eagles do have 8 starters back from last year, and there is hope that this side of the ball can turn it around. Up front the Eagles had to start two freshman last year in defensive end Brad Ohrman and tackle Brandon Slater, and there are lot of people raving about the play of Ohrman after he recorded 6 sacks and 5 tackles for a loss last season. Also back is senior end Brandon Downs, and the new addition to the group will most likely be junior Ryan Leonard at the other tackle spot. At linebacker the Eagles return two solid outside linebackers in seniors Jermaine Jenkins and Andre Hatchett, but the team is really counting on sophomore Marcus English to step in and play well at the middle linebacker spot. In the secondary four juniors are expected to roam around this season, and junior corner Derrick Hunter is the only one who isn’t a returning starter. If this side of the ball can pull it together and keep teams from doing pretty much whatever they want, then the Eagles are going to surprise a lot of football teams this season. My 2009 Prediction: Tie for 5th in MAC West. While I don’t have the Eagles finishing dead last this season in the West, I still think this team is going to find it hard to win games against other MAC opponents this year. The West division is pretty well stacked from top to bottom, and the only way I see the Eagles doing better than I have them here, is if the defense has an amazing turnaround from last season.
