2009 Florida Atlantic Football Predictions
Written July 29, 2009 by InfoPlays
The Florida Atlantic Owls have won back-to-back bowl games and they have a chance to get back to the postseason if they can find answers on defense. Offensively, they have the weapons for a successful season. Their first two games are on the road against Nebraska and South Carolina, but the schedule gets pretty manageable after that. Offense: Rusty Smith seems like he has been in this league forever. The FAU senior quarterback has thrown for nearly 7,000 yards and 56 touchdowns in the past two years. He’ll have his favorite target back in senior wide receiver Cortez Gent, along with another returning starter in Chris Bonner. Tight end Jamari Grant also returns after finishing second on the team with 45 catches to Gent’s 60. Somehow, he finds himself behind senior Jason Harmon going into the fall after Harmon missed all of 2008 with a knee injury in the spring game. Harmon had 63 catches in 2007 so there is plenty of depth and talent at this position. The top two tailbacks from last season are gone, including 1,000-yard rusher Charles Pierre. The Owls will also have to break in four new starters on the offensive line.
Senior guard David Matlock is the only returning starter, but there are juniors and seniors ready to step in. Senior Carl Spitale is the No. 1 right tackle after a solid spring showing. Sophomore Alfred Morris heads into the fall ahead of junior Willie Floyd at tailback. Morris ran for 131 yards on 18 carries in the spring game after registering just seven carries in all of 2008. Junior Jeff Blanchard was the expected starter, but he injured his knee in the spring and could be out for the season. Senior fullback Willie Rose is a versatile weapon in this offense. He is a solid blocker, but averaged nearly five yards/carry in 2008. He ran for 308 yards and also caught 23 passes for 168 more.

Defense: The Owls are rebuilding on defense with eight new starters. They do have a nice trio of ends with sophomores Kevin Cyrille and Jamere Johnson and junior Daniel Joseph. Tackle Josh Savidge is coming off a strong 2008 after missing half of the ‘07 season with a knee injury. Junior Dino Cox had one start in 2008 at tackle so there is experience up front. Edward Bradwell, Malike Eugene and Michael Lockley came out of the spring as the starting trio of linebackers. Bradwell was the biggest impact player last season with 41 tackles and a sack.
Cornerback Tarvoris Hill is one of two returning starters in the secondary. Senior Erick McIntosh starts at the other corner, but there is hope that junior Tavious Polo can regain the form from his freshman year where he had seven interceptions. Injuries limited him to just one start at corner in 2008. The other returning starter in the secondary is junior free safety Ed Alexander. He had three interceptions as a solid playmaker last season.
