2009 Fresno State Bulldogs NCAA Football Predictions
Written July 11, 2009 by Jason Lowry
Entering 2008 there were some that thought the Fresno State Bulldogs were going to be the team to beat in the WAC, but after starting conference play with three losses in their first five games those thoughts quickly disappeared. The Bulldogs ended up finishing the season 4-4 in WAC play and after dropping the final game of the season against Colorado State in the New Mexico Bowl they finished up with an overall record of just 7-6. This year the Bulldogs have 15 starters and though they aren’t the front runners to win the WAC, they have the talent to be the surprise team in this conference.
The Bulldogs have 7 starters returning on offense, but will have to find a new signal caller with the departure of Tom Brandstater. After spring practice it looks like there will be a two way battle for the starting job between junior Ryan Colburn and true freshman Derek Carr, who just so happens to be the brother of NFL quarterback David Carr. The Bulldogs also have another option in redshirt freshman Eban Feathers, who is a little more athletic than the other two. Last year the Bulldogs used a trio of backs to get the job done, and all three are back this season. Senior Anthony Harding led the way with 822 yards and 6 scores, but the guy to watch out for is junior Ryan Mathews, who should be at full health this season. The Bulldogs lost their No.2 receiving threat in Bear Pascoe, but have one of the best receivers in the conference back in senior Seyi Ajirotutu, who led the way with 795 yards and 5 touchdowns. The middle of the line is back with a trio of juniors in the middle, but the Bulldogs are hoping to get a lot out of junior right tackle Kenny Wiggins and sophomore left tackle Bryce Harris. Overall this should be a very good offense, but the question will be will the be able to keep up with the likes of Nevada and Boise State this season. Bet the Bulldogs this season at Sportsbook.com.

On defense the Bulldogs have 8 starters back to a unit that really struggled last year giving up just over 32 points a game and 383 yards of offense. The Bulldogs should be pretty solid up front with the return of senior Wilson Ramos and junior Chris Carter at the two defensive end spots, along with a couple of big juniors in the middle at tackle in Mark Roberts and Cornell Banks. At linebacker the Bulldogs have one of the top tacklers in the conference in senior middle linebacker Ben Jacobs, and he returns to the starting lineup along with sophomore Kyle Knox on the weak side and junior Nico Herron on the strong side. In the secondary the Bulldogs have two spots to fill with the only starters back being senior corner Al Jefferson and senior strong safety Moses Harris. Sophomore Desia Dunn is slated to take over opposite of Jefferson at the corner position, and the Bulldogs are very high on this young kid. At the open safety spot it looks as though it will be junior Lorne Bell stepping in at free safety. There is quite a bit of talent on this side of the ball, but they have to find a way to play better as a unit in 2009 if they want any chance of winning the WAC this year. My 2009 Prediction: 4th in WAC. I don’t think this team is that much better in 2009 compared to 2008 that I can pick them to finish in the top 3 in this conference, but it seems this team does a much better job when the expectations are low. The Bulldogs could surprise, but I have a hard time seeing them getting past either Nevada or Boise State.
