2009 New York Giants NFL Season Predictions
Written June 11, 2009 by Jason Lowry
The New York Giants started the 2008 season looking like they were going to have no problem repeating as Super Bowl Champions, but after their amazing 11-1 start the Giants lost three of their final four games and went limping into the playoffs. The Giants still went into the playoffs with a first round bye, but failed to even score a touchdown in their playoff game against the Philadelphia Eagles. A big reason for the Giants struggles to end the 2008 season, was the departure of their star wide receiver Plaxico Burress after a clubbing incident where he shot himself. Even without Burress the Giants figure to be a real a threat in 2009.
With the loss of Burress and long time veteran receiver Amani Toomer, many thought the Giants would go out and try and land a veteran receiver to come in and fill the void, but instead the Giants look to hoping that they can rebuild from within, including their most recent draft picks of Hakeem Nicks and Ramses Barden. The Giants were also forced to part ways with running back Derrick Ward and safety James Butler. The Giants did bolster up their defensive front with the additions of defensive tackles Chris Canty and Rocky Bernard and linebacker Michael Boley, plus the Giants get back star defensive end Osi Umenyiora who missed all of 2008 with a knee injury.

Offensively there are some concerns with the Giants heading into the 2009 season, and the majority of those concerns come in the passing game. With Burress on the team quarterback Eli Manning had an outstanding 102.7 passer rating, but without Burress Manning posted a not so good 68.6 passer rating. The Giants are hoping that guys like Steve Smith and Domenik Dixon can step in and be the playmakers this team needs, but its not going to be easy to fill the shoes of Plaxico. One thing that could really help the passing game is the continued emergence of tight end Kevin Boss. The running game also might have problems this year, as both Brandon Jacobs and Derrick Ward each ran for over a 1,000 yards last year. Jacobs is still around, but the Giants are going to need someone like Ahmad Bradshaw and Danny Ware to give them solid minutes as backups. Where the offense has little to no worries is up front on the offensive line. The Giants return all 5 starters from a year ago, including center Shaun O’Hara and right guard Chris Snee. Where the Giants should shine in 2009 is on the defensive side of things, as they should once again be able to put an unbelievable amount of pressure on the quarterback. In the absence of Umenyiora last year, Tuck stepped in and had a Pro Bowl season, and with these two guys paired up, they should be able to cause a lot of problems for opposing teams. Look for the Giants to rotate a lot more at defensive tackle this season, as the additions of Canty and Bernard to go along with Barry Cofield should keep some much fresher legs in the middle. At linebacker look for Boley to step in right away and start opposite of Danny Clark. Antonio Pierce will once again man the middle of the field and is the man in charge of making sure the defense is lined up where it should be. The secondary could get even better this year if the pass rush returns to the form of a couple years ago. Corey Webster has emerged as a star at the corner position and it might not be long before Aaron Ross does the same. It looks as though Michael Johnson will beat out C.C. Brown for the starting strong safety spot, but what should have fans excited is the youngster at free safety in 2nd year man Kenny Phillips. I look for this to be one of the top defenses in the league in 2009, and it could be just enough to get this team back to a Super Bowl contender. My Prediction: 3rd in NFC East (9-7) I think the loss of Plaxico looms larger than people are willing to admit. The defense will be great and keep this team in games, but I just don’t see them having enough to get out of they very tough NFC East.

Got something to say?

1) “clubbing incident where he shot someone.” He shot himself you ill-informed twaddlehead!
2)”it could be just enough to get this team back to a Super Bowl contender” Yet you pick them 3rd in the division? Make up yer mind, dooshbag!
