2009 Miami Heat NBA Finals Betting Odds
Written April 16, 2009 by Jason Lowry
After failing to make the playoffs and winning just 15 games last year, the Miami Heat have bounced back and are once again headed to the playoffs. The Heat finished up the season at 43-39 and are set to take on the Atlanta Hawks in first round play. The reason for the Heat’s huge turnaround is the play of all-star Dwayne Wade, who has returned to the form of the 2005-06 season when the Heat won the NBA Championship. It won’t be easy for the Heat in their first round matchup with the Hawks, as they were just 1-3 against their Southeast Division rival this season. It’s hard telling what to expect from this team, as they have been up and down all season, including of late going 5-5 in their last 10 games to finish out the regular season. Here is a quick look at why I think the Heat will and won’t win the NBA Championship this season.
Why They Will Win It All: There is really only one reason why the Heat are even being considered a threat to win it all this season, and that’s because Dwayne Wade is on this team. Wade is an MVP candidate going up against Kobe Bryant and LeBron James, and is the NBA’s leading scorer at 30.2 points per game. The thing is Wade has no choice but to take over the scoring on this team, as they just don’t have the depth that the top teams in the NBA have. If Wade gets it going this guy can carry a team on his shoulders, and there is no doubt that he can get this team past the Hawks in the first round, but whether he has enough in him to get past the like of the Cavaliers, Celtics, and Magic is something only time can tell. The Heat will need to get healthy if they want any chance of making a run this postseason, and that means they need a healthy Jermaine O’Neal and Udonis Haslem. The recent injuries have allowed rookie Michael Beasley to start a few games, and he has really been playing good basketball to finish this season. Why They Won’t Win It All: Lets face it even Michael Jordan had some help, and with the supporting cast that Wade has right now, I just don’t think they have enough talent to make it past the second round. Two of the Heat’s top 5 leading scorers are rookies, in Beasley and Mario Chalmers, and you just can’t expect these guys to step into the postseason and perform at the level needed to beat the best of their conference. Another reason to stay clear of the Heat this postseason is this team is no good on the road, as they were just 15-26 on the road this season, and for this team to get out of the first round they have to win on the road or they will be sent home packing. This team relies so much on Wade, that if he doesn’t have it going this team has little to no shot at winning. The best thing for the Heat is to build off their success this season and focus on getting some additional help for Wade next year so this team can be ready to make a deep run into the playoffs.
