2009 Honda Classic Predictions
Written March 3, 2009 by Jason Lowry

While it wasn’t the start to the 2009 season that many expected from Tiger Woods, as he was knocked out in the 2nd round last week by Tim Clark in the Accenture Match PLay Championship, there was a ton of great golf, and Geoff Ogilvy took home the trophy for the second time in his career. This week the PGA Tour heads to Florida for the 2009 Honda Classic. The defending champion is Ernie Els, and he will be looking to repeat here after a strong performance last week at the Match Play Championship. Though Tiger is taking the week off there are a number of great golfers still in action, and here are my 3 favorites to win the Honda Classic this weekend.
Robert Allenby +2000 odds to win at Sportsbook.com
Allenby is a real solid play this weekend, as he has pretty good odds, and has really played well at the Honda Classic the last two years, as he finished tied for 5th in 2007 and tied for 4th in 2008. This will be Allenby’s third start this season, and his best finish came at the Norther Trust Open, where he finished tied for 17th. Allenby has been scoring well to start this season, and has been solid both in his approach shots and his putting.
Luke Donald +2000 odds to win at Sportsbook.com
Donald is a former winner of this event back in 2006, and had he not shot 71 on the final day last year he would have beat Els, as he ended up finishing second just 1 shot back. While Donald had to pull out of the Accenture Match Play Championship last week with a hurt wrist, he seems to be ready to go, and we really like the fact that he has the top scoring average on tour at 69.05 and he is 6th in putting. Donald already has 3 top 10 finishes this season, and this could be his week to win it all.
Boo Weekley +2500 odds to win at Sportsbook.com
Weekley is another guy that has had a lot of success here at the Honda Classic, as he nearly won this thing back in 2007, but wound up losing in a playoff. In 2008 Weekley played well for the first 3 rounds and was right in the hunt, but wound up shooting an 80 on Sunday to push him all the way back into a tie for 74th. Weekley has played well to start the 2009 season finishing no worse than 17th in his 3 starts. If Weekley can turn those final round blues around, he has to be taken as a serious threat to win this weekend.
