2009 Idaho Vandals NCAA Football Predictions
Written July 14, 2009 by Jason Lowry
The Idaho Vandals had just 3 wins the last two seasons, as the Vandals finished up the 2008 season at 2-10. This year the Vandals didn’t necessarily look like a team that was going to win the WAC heading into spring practices, but did look like it was going to be a bit more competitive this season. Those hopes took a big hit when two starting linebackers in Justin Allen and Jonathan Faraimo left the team. The Vandals now have just 13 returning starters back, and 2009 could end up being another miserable year for Idaho fans.
On offense the Vandals do have 7 starters back, including junior quarterback Nathan Enderle, who passed for 2,077 yards with 20 touchdowns last season. Enderle will have to improve on his numbers from last year without his favorite target from 2008 in Eddie Williams, who led the Vandals with 687 yards and 6 scores last season. That means the Vandals are going to need improved production from returning starters in senior Max Komar and sophomore Preston Davis, along with junior Eric Greenwood, who is expected become the teams No.3 receiver. The Vandals look like they should be set on the ground with the return of junior Deonte’ Jackson and Sophomore Princeton McCarty. Both scored 3 touchdowns last year, but Jackson led the way with 696 yards. The running will have to deal with three new starters on the defensive line, as the only returning starters are senior left guard Mike Iupati and senior right tackle Ryan Sinclair. It looks as though sophomore Matt Cleveland will take over at left tackle, while senior Adam Juratovac takes over at right guard and redshirt freshman Guy Reynolds takes over at center. The offense struggled last year scoring just 18.5 points per game, but if the line holds up the Vandals should have improved play at quarterback and in the running game, and that should lead to some more points from this unit. On defense the Vandals have just 6 starters back, and there is no question that this team is going to miss the two players that departed. The Vandals would have had all three starters back this season at linebacker, but now must ask junior Paul Senescall and sophomore Robert Siavii to step in and play along side junior JoJo Dickson. The Vandals will also be young up front on the line, as two more sophomores are expected to crack the lineup in defensive end Hank Bryant and tackle Michael Cosgrove. Luckily for Cosgrove he should have a pretty easy transition into the starting lineup, as he will play alongside one of the best tackles in the WAC in junior Jonah Sataraka. The secondary brings backs three starters, including the safety duo of junior Shiloh Keo and senior Virdell Larkins. Joining junior Isaac Butts at corner will more than likely be sophomore Kenneth Patten, who did see some action last year as a freshman. Losing two of your top three tacklers is never easy, and that is the challenge this team will face. I think this side of the ball is going to really struggle, and will likely be the reason the Vandals stay near the bottom of the WAC. Bet the WAC this season at Sportsbook.com.
My 2009 Prediction: 8th in the WAC. The Vandals just don’t have the talent to compete with the top teams of this conference, and I really feel like this team is going to struggle to win a game in conference play this season, but should be able to beat New Mexico State to keep from finishing in last place in the WAC.
