2009 Jacksonville Jaguars NFL Season Predictions

Written June 20, 2009 by Jason Lowry

Jacksonville Jaguars 2009 PredictionsIt was a very rough season for the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2008, as they came into the season with expectations of not only winning the AFC South but this was a team that had hopes of a Super Bowl after their 12-4 season in 2007. Its hard to say exactly what caused this team to finish just 5-11and dead last in the AFC South, but this team was really hit by the injury bug in 2008, especially on the offensive line. With the powerhouses of Tennessee and Indianapolis at the top of this division and the increasingly better play of the Texans, a lot would have to go right for this team to bounce back and return to the top of this division in 2009.

The Jaguars offseason included some cleaning house of some very familiar faces, as the days of running back Fred Taylor, linebacker Mike Peterson, defensive end Paul Spicer, 2004 first round pick Reggie Williams, and 2005 first round pick Matt Jones. The Jaguars are now going to put even more focus on building their team through the draft and by signing low market free agents. With their first two picks in the 2009 draft the Jaguars selected offensive tackles Eugene Monroe and Eben Britton to help beef up a line that was a weak spot in 2008. They then landed some help on the defensive side of things in defensive tackle Terrance Knighton and corner Derek Cox. The Jaguars then spent their final 5 picks on 3 receivers, a tight end, and a running back. In an attempt to give quarterback David Garrard a go to guy on the outside, the Jaguars signed veteran free agent Torry Holt, who likely still has a couple years of solid production left in the tank. Other key additions in free agency came in offensive tackle Tra Thomas and safety Sean Considine.

On offense the Jaguars main concern will be putting a healthy unit up front on the offensive line. Last year the Jaguars lost both starting guards Vince Manuwai and Mo Williams in the first game of the season, and this unit never recovered. The only starter that played in all 16 games was tackle Tony Pashos, and its unclear if he will even start this season with all the talent this team has added at that position. One guy who has to love all the moves up front is running back Maurice Jones-Drew, who is now the featured back after three years of backing up Taylor. If the line improves I think we could see a big season from this little guy that can really get it going in the open field. After an outstanding season in 2007, Garrard could be in danger of losing his job if he doesn’t perform at a higher level in 2009. After throwing just three interceptions in 2007, Garrard had 13 giveaways in 2008, but the team is hoping that with a little more protection he can bounce back. If Holt can come in and give this team some solid production, it will really open up the offense, but Holt had just 796 yards and 3 touchdowns in 2008. Some of that was likely do to age, but he also played on a very bad St. Louis Rams team, that struggled to do much of anything on offense. It looks as though Dennis Northcutt and Mike Walker have the edge at the No.2 and No.3 spots, but keep a close eye on rookies Mike Thomas and Jarett Dillard. There is potential for this unit to get this team back where it was in 2007, but they have to stay healthy. Bet the Jaguars +225 to win the AFC South at Sportsbook.com.

The Jaguars have progressively got worse on defense since being ranked second in 2006, and if they want any shot at rebounding in 2009 they need to get better on this side of the ball. The Jaguars spent two early picks in last year’s draft on defensive ends Derrick Harvery and Quenttin Groves, but neither had a very good rookie season, as the duo combined for just six sacks. The veteran defensive end Reggie Hayward led the team with just 4.5 sacks, and they need him and veteran defensive tackle John Henderson to both play better this season. Playing alongside Henderson to start the season will be Rob Meier, but the rookie Knighton has the potential to take over this spot at some point this season. At linebacker the Jaguars have to find someone to replace Peterson in the middle, and it looks it will end up being Justin Durant . On the outside will be Daryl Smith and Clint Ingram, and Smith could end up in the middle if Durant doesn’t do a good job in the middle. The secondary has some openings, as the only two spots that are pretty much locked up is at corner in Rashean Mathis and at free safety in Reggie Nelson. As of right now it looks like the free agent pick of Considine will be the guy to start at strong safety and the veteran Brian Williams should play opposite of Mathis at the other corner spot. The defense like the offense has potential to put together a strong season, but its hard to see what this unit really did to make it that much better in 2009. My Prediction: 4th AFC South(6-10) I think the Jaguars improve off the bad run they had in 2009, but this division is stacked and it just doesn’t seem like they did enough to turn things around in just one season.

Jack is trying to regain this locker room. It’s not working. His assistants always have to fall on their sword for him. He should be out by the end of the year. 5-11.
