2009 Kansas State Football Predictions
Written June 23, 2009 by InfoPlays
Kansas State fans idolize Bill Snyder, but most are realistic in his return to coaching. If the Wildcats can just play hard and show signs of recovery, Snyder, who turns 70 during the season, will have done a great job. The schedule is reasonable, but Missouri and Kansas have improved since Snyder re-signed after the 2005 season. That won’t make his first season back any easier. The Wildcats are listed at +3000 to win the Big 12 conference this season according to the most recent college football odds.
Offense: A lack of size on offense is the theme of the Kansas State Wildcats this season. They could start 5-8 Keith Valentine at tailback, though he’ll be pushed by 5-9 freshmen John Hubert and Timothy Flanders. The Wildcats’ best receiver last season was 5-7 waterbug Brandon Banks, who topped 1,000 receiving yards to earn Big 12 Offensive Newcomer of the Year honors. Not everyone is small, as 6-3 Lamark Brown returns to his natural position at wide receiver after leading the team in rushing last season. The biggest loss is former quarterback Josh Freeman, a first-round NFL draft pick.
Junior Carson Coffman was the backup QB last season. He will get the first chance to start. He’s a 6-3 pocket passer, and he spent most of the spring and summer learning how to run the option, too. That style of offense could lead to playing time for junior college transfer Daniel Thomas, a terrific athlete at 6-2, 227 pounds. Tight end Jeron Mastrud has started 29 games in his career, catching 38 balls for 435 yards last season. Senior Nick Stringer will take over at left tackle, while the right tackle spot will be a battle between sophomores Clyde Aufner and Zach Hanson for starting duties. Brock Unruh has experience at guard, but Colten Freeze was a pleasant surprise last season and junior Trevor Viers returns from injury. Zach Kendall returns after starting at center, but he might be pushed to guard by Wade Weibert.

Defense: A unit that was one of the worst nationally has to be improved. It starts with ends Brandon Harold and Eric Childs. Harold was a Freshman All-American, the leading freshman nationally with 10.5 tackles for loss. Childs, a senior, could improve on his 27 unassisted tackles and 6.5 tackles for loss. Virginia transfer Jeffrey Fitzgerald could be a big key at tackle after starting 25 games and recording 23.5 tackles for loss in 2 seasons with the Cavaliers.
Senior Ulla Pomele leads the linebackers, with Alex Hrebec and John Houlik returning as well. Joshua Moore is one of the conference’s best cornerbacks, but there is no sure thing opposite him. The Wildcats signed seven players in the secondary in the ‘09 recruiting class, and some will be asked to play right away. At free safety, sophomore Tyson Hartman was impressive last season considering he was still a quarterback three games into the season. He’s tall at 6-3, and he’s a high-level athlete now learning the details of the position. Strong safety Courtney Herndon is a consistent performer.

Got something to say?

I know people think were going to be could because we got Bill Snyder back but face the facts we lost our best player Josh Freeman and Snyder might not be as good as he used to be I took a look at our scheduel and we could probably go 4-8 at best unless Snyder can lead us to anther come back

Theres also a chance we can go 2-10 because Iowa State, UCLA, Colorado, and Texas A&M are all going to be much more experienced and better those are must win games if we want to make it to a bowl game this year

Lets not fool our selves KSU football will not be dominant in the first year of its return savior. I do think the team will surprise people assuming there are no serious injuries as the team has little depth. K-State will win a minimum of six games and maybe eight games. You forgot about players who have transfered and are eligible to play like the quarterback from southern florida. the offense will be more balanced with more of an emphasis on running and contolling field position and the clock. The defense will blitz more and be more disciplined so it will not be out of position. Bill Snyder teams turn the ball over less and make less mistakes. Home games will be loud and deadly for some teams there will be some excitement in the stadium this year. Coach Snyder has his option quarterback already set up for next season who is the transfer from Oregon. He will give us the spark like from the past to compete for the big 12 north. This year is more of a learning period and setting a tone for the future.
