2009 Kent State Football Predictions

Written July 21, 2009 by InfoPlays

2009 Kent State Football PredictionsAfter a 4-8 season in 2008, Doug Martin is now 19-39 in five years as Kent State head coach. Finally, there is a great chance for improvement this season as five of the Flashes’ first seven foes have first-year head coaches. Four of those seven contests will be held at Dix Stadium, so a fast start will be crucial as Martin knows another down season could mean his tenure will be over. If sophomore QB Giorgio Morgan can replace Julian Edelman, KSU will be competitive in 2009. Sportsbook.com offers 10% sign-up bonuses and reduced Friday juice. Offense: The Kent State Golden Flashes have the goods on offense to become one of the better units in the MAC. They’ll need some receivers to step up to help out new quarterback Giorgio Morgan, but senior running back Eugene Jarvis will be the one to carry the load. Jarvis averaged 145 rushing yards/game in the four contests he carried the ball at least 20 times last season. Jarvis doesn’t have the frame to carry the ball 250 times in a season at 5-5, 170 pounds, but he did rush for 1,700 yards as a sophomore two years ago. He’ll be spelled by Andre Flowers this fall.

The offensive line is an asset with four returning starters. Kent State finished 11th in the nation in rushing last year at 230.6 rushing yards/game, so having this much experience back on the offensive line should mean a solid rushing attack again in 2009. Giorgio Morgan has a big arm, but the sophomore was a redshirt last season and is only proven in a clipboard-carrying role. Senior Anthony Magazu is an athletic sophomore, and he along with Sal Battles are still in the quarterback competition. There isn’t any proven production at the receiver position, but freshman Tyshon Goode emerged as a big-play threat in spring drills.

Defense: Junior safety Brian Lainhart has All-MAC potential and he’ll serve as the quarterback of a defense that was lit up in 2008. He is one of three returning starters in a polished secondary that will welcome sophomore Josh Pleasant at cornerback, a name that was highlighted often in the spring. Linebacker Cobrani Mixon transferred from Michigan and will be counted upon to add some muscle to the middle of the defense.

KSU returns senior nose tackle Sam Frist and senior Aaron Hall at defensive tackle, so they have the experience up front to be dominant. But there is a lack of depth on the defensive line with a pair of new starters at defensive end and not much proven talent after the starters. Red-zone defense was their weakness as the Flashes ranked 12th in the conference in that category. Mixon and Pleasant can get to the ball in a hurry, but the tell-tale positions are on the edges. Not only will two new defensive ends be broken in, but also both outside linebacker positions will see a pair of new starters.
