2009 Kentucky Derby Post Positions

Written April 29, 2009 by Steve Janus

2009-kentucky-derby-post-positionsThe 135th Kentucky Derby is coming up this weekend and the post positions have been announced.  Here’s a complete list of the post positions, as well as some insight to what these positions could mean for some of the contenders.  Note that this year’s favorite, I Want Revenge, pulled the unlucky #13 position.

2009 Kentucky Derby Post Positions & Odds: #1 – West Side Bernie (30/1), #2 – Musket Man (20/1), #3 - Mr. Hot Stuff (30/1), #4 - Advice (30/1), #5 – Hold Me Back (15/1), #6 - Frisean Fire (5/1), #7 – Papa Clem (20/1), #8 – Mine That Bird (50/1), #9 – Join In The Dance (50/1), #10 – Regal Ransom (30/1), #11 – Chocolate Candy (20/1), #12 – General Quarters (20/1), #13 – I Want Revenge (3/1), #14 Atomic Rain, #15 – Dunkirk (4/1), #16 – Pioneer of The Nile (4/1), #17 – Summer Bird (50/1), #18 – Nowhere to Hide (50/1), #19 – Desert Party (15/1), #20 – Flying Private (50/1)

The three positions on the inside are generally considered to be the worst in races like the Kentucky Derby, where the track has a full, or nearly full field.  The odds for these horses aren’t great, but coming in at between 20/1 and 30/1 odds in the Kentucky Derby doesn’t count them out.  If we’ve learned anything through watching this race in the past it’s that the exception to one rule or another is likely to be made.

Last year’s winner, Big Brown, came out of the #20 spot, a place occupied by Flying Private this year, but give more credit to Big Brown as a superior horse than his post position.  Traditionally, horses that pull the outside lanes do not end up in the winner’s circle.

If you were looking to pin down the “winningest” post position in Kentucky Derby, the #5 and #16 positions have produced the largest number of champions, and with one of this year’s favorites, Pioneer of the Nile (4/1) running in the #16 spot, you can bet there will be plenty of savvy bettors banking on him.

The field has been set for this Saturday, May 2nd for the Kentucky Derby.  Be sure to check back often over the next several days for more updates and tips on betting the Kentucky Derby from Betfirms.com.

HUH??? THEY PICK THERE OWN POST POSITION!!!
Whoever wrote this article about post positions obviously is not qualified to be writing about horse racing because this article about luck of the draw post positions and Big Brown last year is clueless! Big brown pickerd that spot!

The way the draw works is that a number is picked out of a hat and the owner/trainer PICKS POST POSITION THEY WANT based on what left! and i believe this year the same.
So number 1 picks any position they want and #20 pick gets what left.
last year Big Brown picked 15th and could have taken inside but did not!
Suggest writer not make up stories out of air!

I’m not sure what you are disagreeing with here. I simply said that Big Brown was a better horse and that traditionally the outside lanes do not fair as well in the Kentucky Derby as the interior ones. That is a fact, it has nothing to do with how the post position is drawn. Horses that do “pull” (are stuck with) the outside lanes (i.e. those that do not get their first choice of post) simply have not done as well in the history of the race.

Thank goodness for the horse lovers with common horse sense. No-one knows everything about this great sport, but most everyone has an opinion. Me too. I LOVE IT..I can’t wait for the season to arrive every year.GOD bless the jockeys, the trainers, and the owners. GOOD LUCK and may the winds of a safe race be with you all.P.S. Let’s not grunble among ourselves and no I’m not Pollyanna, I just love horses.
