2009 Kentucky Derby Props
Written April 30, 2009 by Steve Janus
With the 2009 Kentucky Derby just on the horizon, sportsbooks like to throw out all kinds of different wagers you can make on the event. The following is a list of some of the more interesting prop bets in this year’s Kentucky Derby.
The Kentucky Derby is the first of three events of the Horse Racing Triple Crown. Right now you can bet on whether or not there will be a Triple Crown winner in 2009. Odds makers aren’t very confident in the idea. If you think there a Triple Crown winner will emerge from this year’s field, you can bet it at +600 odds. To bet that there won’t be a Triple Crown winner this year you’d need to lay -1100 odds.
You also have the option to bet on the official time of the winner of the 2009 Kentucky Derby. The Over/Under on the time has been set at 2:01.60, which is well under the average for the last few decades, but it is expected to be a pretty fast field. As a frame of reference, last year Big Brown ran an official time of 2:01.82, one of the top 25 finishes in Kentucky Derby history.
With an even number of odd and even saddlecloths on the horses (10 odd/10 even), you might do well by taking the even numbered cloth at +125 odds, though there are more favorites to win the race with odds numbered cloths, which is why an odd numbered saddlecloth to win the race is listed at -155.
Will the crowd attendance of the 2009 Kentucky Derby be larger than the crowd that saw the 2008 derby? Last year’s attendance came in at around 157,770, while the record for attendance was the 100th derby with more than 164,000 fans. Odds makers think this year will be less popular than last year as you can bet Yes it will go over last year’s total at +140 or No it won’t at -180.
As I previously mentioned, Big Brown’s time last year came in at 2:01.92. Do you think that any horses in the field will beat that time? If so, you can bet that at least one horse will at +160, but the odds say nobody will reach that time, as you’d have to bet at -200 odds if you don’t think any horse will finish under that time.
Think you know which horse is the worst in this year’s Kentucky Derby? You also have the option to bet on who will finish last. Right now the favorite to lose is Atomic Rain at 9/2 odds with Flying Private, Mine That Bird, and West Side Bernie all coming with 8/1 odds to finish last.
These are just some of your options. You can also bet head-to-head on individual horses, as well as silly props like what color Leann Rimes hat will be when she comes out to sing the national anthem. If you aren’t into horse racing that much, or just don’t have a good feel for the winner, these prop bets will give you something to wager on and enjoy during the event.
