2009 Kentucky Derby is Wide Open

There is good news for horse racing fans this year, the 2009 Kentucky Derby is only one week away and by all indications it is going to be anybody’s race. Last year Big Brown came in and seemed invincible, and then ran like he pretty much was. This year there are several different horses that have a chance at winning and that means action should be heavy and balanced. Let’s take a look at a few different horses that might be worth a wager come Saturday.
Proven & Fast – There are three horses to take a look at who have the highest Beyer speed figures from races on dirt tracks. Dunkrik’s 108, Freisan Fire’s 104, and I Want Revent’s 103. It comes as no surprise then that the three favorites from the race come out of this group. Bodog has their odds to win the 2009 Kentucky Derby posted. The favorite is I Want Revenge at 11/4, with Dunkirk at 6/1 and Friesan Fire at 13/2. Bodog is also offering a $50 match bonus on deposits of $50 for the Derby!
The Next Tier – There are eight different horses that have done most of their prepping for the Derby on synthetic tracks, but none of these horses have hit a 100 Beyer. Hold Me Back 97, Pioneer of the Nile and Mr. Hot Stuff on 96, General Quarters 95, and 94 for Papa Clem, Chocolate Candy, Advice and Flying Private. Bodog thinks pretty highly of Pioneer of the Nile nonetheless, listing the horse among the favorites at 6/1. Papa Clem is also a semi-favorite at 12/1 with Chocolate Candy at 14/1. Hold Me Back and General Quarters are at 28/1, Advice is 30/1, Flying Private 40/1, and Mr. Hot Stuff is at 45/1.
Dubai Horses – The two horses from Dubai are getting quite a bit of love from the odds makers as Desert Party is at 16/1 and Regal Ranson is at 15/1. While you don’t know exactly how these horses are going to do coming over from across the planet, they are fast horses that are very well trained. I think they might be worth a look this week.
Unknowns – The rest of the runners to me don’t really have a shot. There are plenty of hopefuls but just do not have the talent to win the fastest two minutes in sports.
