2009 Kobalt Tools 500 Predictions
Written March 5, 2009 by Jason Lowry

This Sunday the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series heads east after two weeks on the West Coast, as drivers get ready for the 2009 Kobalt Tools 500 from Atlanta Motor Speedway. Last week Kyle Busch grabbed his first win of the 2009 season, as he took home the checkered flag at the Shelby 427, and Busch figures to be a big factor this weekend, as he is the defending champion here at the Kobalt Tools 500. If speed is what you like then this will be the race to watch, as Atlanta Motor Speedway is the fastest track on the Sprint Cup circuit with drivers reaching speeds of up to 200 mph. Here is a look at the 3 drivers I feel have the best shot at winning the Kobalt Tools 500 this weekend.
Carl Edwards +500 odds to win at Sportsbook.com
Three races into the season and Edwards sits in 9th place in the points standings, as he only has one top 10 finish this season. The thing is this guy is due for a great finish this weekend, and this is just the track for him to do it. Edwards has won 3 times at Atlanta Motor Speedway, and while he finished 42 at the Kobalt Tools 500 last year because of engine problems, he came back and won the race held at this track later in the season. Look for Edwards to be right there on the final lap, as he is our overall favorite to win this race.
Tony Stewart +2000 odds to win at Sportsbook.com
After two top 10 finishes to start the season at the Daytona 500 and Auto Club 500, Stewart had a little tougher time last week at the Shelby 427 finishing 26th. Tony Stewart won this race back in 2002, and has had a number of great showings at Atlanta Motor Speedway, including 8 top 5 finishes throughout his career. Stewart was the runner-up to Kyle Busch here last season, and we feel he has the car to win the race if not finish in the top 3 this weekend.
Dale Earnhardt Jr +200 odds to win at Sportsbook.com
It’s been an extremely disappointing start to the 2009 season for Earnhardt Jr, as his best finish is the 10th place showing he had last week at the Shelby 427. Thanks to the slow start Earnhardt Jr. is 29th in the point standings, but its a long season and we expect this guy to be in the top 12 come seasons end, and we think he starts his way back to the top with a strong showing this weekend at the Kobalt Tools 500, where he won here back in 2004.
