2009 LifeLock 400 Predictions
Written June 11, 2009 by Jason Lowry
This week the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series heads to Michigan International Speedway for the 2009 running of the LifeLock 400. Last week at the Pocono 500 Tony Stewart grabbed his first win of the season, and is now your 2009 points leader over 2nd place driver Jeff Gordon. This week’s race at Michigan International Speedway is the first of two races held at this track, as drivers will be back here in the middle of August for the Michigan 400. It has been a very disappointing season for Dale Earnhardt Jr., as he sits in 20th place in the point standings and in desperate need of a couple wins if he wants any chance of making the top 12. One thing Earnhardt has going for him this weekend, is he is the defending champion of this race, and will be doing whatever it takes to repeat. The race is scheduled for Sunday afternoon, and with just a few days separating us from the race, here is a look at the 3 drivers I feel have a great shot at winning the LifeLock 400 this weekend.
Kyle Busch +600 to win at Sportsbook.com: Busch currently sits in 9th place in the points standings, and a big reason for that is he has only one top 10 finish in his last 4 races. Busch was the dominant driver a year ago, as he seemed to win nearly every time he started up his engine, but it hasn’t been so easy in 2009. Busch does have 3 wins on the season, but only 1 in the last 9 races. Busch has never won here at Michigan, but he hasn’t finished outside of the to top 15 in each of his last 5 starts on this track, and is coming off a 2nd place finish in his last race here in the fall of 2008. I look for Busch to get back on the board with yet another win and secure his spot in the top 12 for the race for the championship at the end of the year.
Jeff Gordon +800 to win at Sportsbook.com: After a couple races outside of the top 10, Gordon finished 4th last week at the Pocono 500 for his 9th top 10 finish of the season. Over the years Gordon has won here at Michigan International Speedway two times, but the last win was all the way back in 2001. Even without a lot of wins Gordon has really raced well on this track, as he has 15 career top five finishes on this track. With teammate Earnhardt Jr. seemingly out of the mix in 2009, it will be up to Gordon and Jimmie Johnson to carry Hendricks Motor Sports to another points title. I think if you are looking for a safe bet to be right in the thick of things and have a great shot to win this race, than Gordon is just the guy you are looking for.
Matt Kenseth +1200 to win at Sportsbook.com: Kenseth is another driver that has really raced well at Michigan over the years, in fact if it wasn’t for an accident in 2007 that caused him to finish 42nd, Kenseth’s worse start would be a 17th place finish back in 2000. Kenseth has won twice here at Michigan, with the last one coming back in 2006. Kenseth finished 3rd and 5th at the two races at Michigan last year, and if you are looking for a driver with great odds for your money to win this weekend, I don’t think you should look any farther than the #17 car.
