2009 Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin Cajuns NCAA Football Predictions

Written July 1, 2009 by Jason Lowry

Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns 2009 PredictionsThe Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin’ Cajuns put together one of their better seasons going 6-6 overall and finishing alone in second place in the Sun Belt Conference at 5-2, but were not rewarded with the schools first ever bowl game appearance. The Ragin’ Cajons are hoping that 2009 will be even better with 16 returning starters, but they will have to overcome losing a number of their top offensive players.

The Ragin Cajuns’ offense might have seven players coming back for the 2009 season, but this unit will have to replace their top passer, top runner, their top receiver from the 2008 season. Sophomores Brad McGuire and Chris Masson will compete this fall for the starting quarterback job, but not only did the Ragin’ Cajuns lose a solid passer in Michael Desormeaux, they lost a 1,000 yard rusher as well, as Desormeaux was second on the team with 1,035 rushing yards and 5 touchdowns. They will also have to find a way to replace running back Tyrell Fenroy, who had a monster season with 1,375 yards and 19 touchdowns. Senior Undrea Sails is poised to take over for Fenroy, but don’t expect the same production. The Ragin’ Cajuns will also have to replace top receiver Jason Cherry, who caught 46 passes for 656 yards and 7 scores last season. The team will count on a couple sophomores to jolt the passing game, as tight end Ladarius Green is the leading receiver coming back from 2008, and wide out Andrew Joseph has the potential to be a big part of this offense. The team also brings back senior Louis Lee and junior Vernon Wolfe. The one thing that could keep this unit together is the play of the offensive line, as the Ragin’ Cajuns should have the best line of any team in the Sun Belt Conference, as almost every one of the five returning starters have the ability to be first team all-conference, maybe with the exception of junior right guard Ian Burks. It is never easy to replace the kind of production that this team has lost, especially at a smaller school like Louisiana-Lafayette, but if they can keep from turning it over and find a way to put points on the board the defense just might be good enough to keep this team at the top of the Sun Belt Conference. The defense remains pretty much in tact with 9 starters back from the 2008, but this unit did have its struggles at times last season. Up front the Ragin’ Cajuns return both defensive ends in junior Terrell Richardson and senior Hall Davis, with Davis being the better of the two after he recorded 3.5 sacks to Richardson’s 0 last season. At defensive tackle the Cajuns are expected to plug in senior LaQuincy Williams at the open spot, and he could end up being the best tackle on the team. At linebacker the Ragin’ Cajuns have some pretty solid talent, as all three starters return from last season. Junior Daylon McCoy and senior Antwyne Zanders tied for the team lead last season with 69 tackles, and both should be force again this season. In the secondary the Ragin’ Cajuns return both starting corners from last season in junior Orkeys Auriene and sophomore Dwight Bentley, and return starting free safety in junior Cerren Blount. The open strong safety position looks like it will land to sophomore Chris Richard. If you had to describe this unit in one word it would be speed, as they are a very fast bunch on the defensive side of things. They need to improve against the run after giving up nearly 200 yards a game last season, but should once again be near the top against the pass. My 2009 Prediction: Tie for 6th in Sun Belt Conference. I just don’t think the team will be able to overcome the losses on the offensive side of things. The defense will reverse the roll of last season and likely keep this team in more games than it loses, but not enough to keep this team at the top of the Sun Belt Conference.
