2009 Louisiana Tech Football Predictions

Written July 14, 2009 by InfoPlays

2009 Louisiana Tech Football PredictionsThe Louisiana Tech Bulldogs finished with an 8-5 record last season, thanks in large part to leading the WAC with a plus-nine turnover margin with a defense that took chances, and an offense that didn’t. Both could change in 2009. Head coach Derek Dooley has vowed to get better in the passing game on both sides of the ball. Improvement on offense should be easier with nine returning starters, and if the defense improves against the pass the Bulldogs could end up on the right side of the bowl cut again. Sportsbook.com has some of the best college football lines available and they post early in the week! You can earn a 10% sign-up bonus and reduced juice on Friday’s with this trusted book!

Offense: Since the Bulldogs surprised the WAC with an eight-win season and an Independence Bowl victory, it gets a pass on its abysmal throwing game in 2008. With nine starters back on offense, the goal is improving last year’s league-worst average of 156 passing yards/game. Junior QB Ross Jenkins will be under center after finishing with a 6-2 record as a starter last year. He managed the game very well, but didn’t make many big plays with his arm, averaging just 105 passing yards/game with seven touchdowns and three interceptions. He’ll be asked to take a few more chances in ‘09.

His best target at receiver will be Phillip Livas, who had 2,015 all-purpose yards last season as a wideout and return specialist. Senior running back Daniel Porter is the star of this team, coming off a first-team All-WAC season where he rushed for 1,100 yards and nine touchdowns. He’ll need 1,122 yards to capture the school’s all-time rushing mark. Five returning starters on the offensive line will pave the way for Porter, which is a big reason why big things are expected from him in ‘09. Left tackle Rob McGill is the leader of this unit, and he is in line for all-league honors.

Defense: Once again, the front four will be the strength of the Bulldogs’ defense. First-team All-WAC tackle D’Anthony “Boo” Smith had five sacks and 65 tackles to help lead a defense that allowed just 104 rushing yards/game, which was second-best in the WAC and 13th in the country. Fellow tackle Mason Hitt is also a returning starter to team with Smith as run-stuffers in the middle again. But just like the offense, the focus for the defense will be in the air.

Louisiana Tech allowed 272.7 passing yards/game last season, which was second-worst in the league and 113th nationally. The secondary will rely on the return of starting safeties Deon Young and Antonio Baker to spearhead the effort against the pass. Brian White is the only returning starter at linebacker, but his season ended early last year due to injury. The linebacking corps benefits from having a strong defensive line.
