2009 March Madness Midwest Region Predictions
Written March 18, 2009 by Anthony Moretti
Let’s take a look at the Midwest Region section of the bracket and how I think it will pan out round by round. The Midwest features my choice to win the NCAA tournament this year, Louisville, as well as two games I have pegged as possible upsets. Here are my predictions on the Midwest Region, feel free to comment on my selections or post some picks of your own. Here we go! Remember if that you want to bet your picks, BetUS is offering our readers a 100% match bonus up to $500!
First Round: The #1 seed Louisville against the play-in game winner, Morehead State is a no-brainer, take the Cardinals to advance. Traditionally the #9 seed actually beats the #8 seed more often than not, but I see the #8 advancing with Ohio State beating Siena. My first upset, if you can call it that, come with the #12 seed Arizona defeating the #5 seeded Utah Utes. I’ve been impressed with Utah this season, but I think this is a poor match up for them. With Wake Forest (4) against Cleveland State (13) the Demon Deacons move on with a sizable victory. 6th seeded West Virginia has been put on a short list of teams to make a run in the tournament, and while I think their tournament ends against Kansas, I do like them to slide past Dayton (11). No big upset in the 3rd seed vs the 14th seed for me as Kansas will most likely take care of business against North Dakota State. My second upset for the region takes USC (10) over Boston College (7). Much like the 1 seed vs the 2 seed match up the 2 vs 15 should be a cake-walk for the favorite, Michigan State, over Robert Morris. Bet the first round of the tournament with BetUS.
Second Round: Louisville may actually run into some head-to-head match up problems with Ohio State, but I think that they ultimately win the game outright and advance. My upset pick in the first round, Arizona faces Wake Forest, and while the Deacons were off and on in the ACC this year I do think they beat the Wildcats in the second round. West Virginia vs Kansas could be a very interesting match up, but I have the Jayhawks moving on in my bracket. I very nearly took USC to upset the #2 seed Michigan State, but in the end I took the Spartans over the Trojans to get to the Sweet 16.
Sweet 16: If my predictions are correct and Wake Forest plays Louisville, we’ll be in for a great game. Both teams feature players that have NBA-caliber talent. In the end I think the the Cardinals are the better overall team and win in this round handily. There is no easy choice between Kansas and Michigan State to advance to the Elite 8, but I’ll take the defending champs and Sherron Collins over the Spartans in this very close contest. Bet the Sweet 16 with Bookmaker.
Elite 8: Here is where the men are separated from the boys with a chance to reach the Final Four. While I like the fact that Kansas is playing to defend last year’s title, I can’t help but feel like they are over-matched against Louisville. The Cardinals are big and athletic and create individual match ups all over the floor with just about anyone they face, including Kansas. I’m taking Louisville to represent the Midwest in the Final Four and eventually to move on and win the National Title this year.
