2009 Maryland Football Predictions

Written June 26, 2009 by InfoPlays

2009 Maryland Football Predictions60 of 85 scholarship players still have three or more years of eligibility, illustrating the youth of the Maryland Terrapins. There are a ton of new faces on the depth chart, and both the offensive and defensive lines have serious question marks entering ‘09. The Terps’ past three recruiting classes have been highly rated, so there is plenty of talent in the cupboard. But it might not be enough right now against the competitive middle of the ACC. Maryland is listed at +2500 to win the ACC Championship according to the most recent college football odds.

Offense: Maryland struggled to adapt to offensive coordinator James Franklin’s West Coast-style passing offense last year. It’s a timing-based attack predicated on quick recognition by the quarterback, accurate throws and yards after the catch. With more experience in this system between QB Chris Turner and his receiving corps, the offense should run much smoother this season. Turner, who has made 20 starts over the past two seasons and owns a 6-1 record against Top 25 teams, has a chance to conclude his career as one of the most prolific passers in school history. He is seventh on Maryland’s all-time list with 4,474 passing yards, fourth in completion percentage at 59.7%, and fifth in completions with 367.

There are plenty of weapons for Turner to utilize, beginning with running back Da’Rel Scott who was a first-team ALL-ACC selection after rushing for 1,133 yards and eight touchdowns in ‘08. Scott has game-breaking speed, but he must become more consistent and versatile when trying to run through the middle of the line. Despite the loss of first-round NFL draft pick Darrius Heyward-Bey and two other part-time starters, the Terrapins hope to have one of the most potent receiving corps in the ACC. Sophomore Torrey Smith started the second half of the season last year and recorded 24 catches for 336 yards. He leads a group of wideouts that is loaded with size, speed and athleticism. Tackle Bruce Campbell and Phil Costa are the lone returning starters on the offensive line, with the latter being switched from right guard to center.

Defense: Don Brown has replaced Chris Cosh as coordinator and switched from a 3-4 base to a 4-3. He employs an aggressive, attacking scheme after coming over from UMass. Nose tackle Travis Ivey took his game to another level during spring camp after enduring an injury-plagued 2008 campaign. The senior has an NFL body and appears ready to emerge as an interior presence.

The linebacking corps is talented, with juniors Alex Wujciak and Adrian Motten leading the way. Wujciak led Maryland with a monster year, recording 133 tackles last season and he’s the perfect fit at middle linebacker in the new 4-3 look. Motten is a multi-dimensional backer with All-ACC potential. Hard-hitting safety Terrell Skinner and cornerback Anthony Wiseman are two returning starters in a decently experienced secondary. Nolan Carroll emerged as the top cover corner during spring camp, with Jamari McCollough looking solid at strong safety.
