2009 Masters Betting Odds

Written April 6, 2009 by Jason Lowry

The MastersWith 3 months of golf in the bag, its time for the first major of the season, as the best golfers in the world get ready to take aim at the 2009 Masters held annually at Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia. First round action is set to get underway this Thursday and is scheduled to finish up on Easter Sunday with the winner being presented the coveted green jacket. All eyes will be on Tiger Woods, as Woods missed the last 2 majors of last season because of injuries. Woods got his first win since coming back a couple weeks ago at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, and just the fact that he is in the field and playing adds so much to this event. While Woods is the odds on favorite to win, Trevor Immelman is the defending champion, and the man that held off Woods late run last year. Another guy to keep your eye on is Padraig Harrington, who won both the British Open and the PGA Championship to finish off last year, but the question is can he do it with Tiger in the field? To help you get going on the Masters I have broken down the field into the favorites, guys in the middle of the pack, and the long shots I feel have a chance at winning this week.

Favorites: Tiger Woods +175 and Phil Mickelson +700

It should come to no surprise that these to guys are 1 and 2 when it comes to the odds on favorites to win this event, but its a little surprising to see no other names with odds anywhere near these two guys. Woods will be looking for his 5th green jacket this week, and his first Masters win since 2005. Its not as though Woods hasn’t been playing well here at Augusta, as he hasn’t finished worse than 3rd since winning it in 2005, including two straight 2nd place finishes. Mickelson will be looking for his 3rd green jacket in the last 6 years, as he has wins here in 2004 and 2006. Both players have wins this season, and while this is just the 4th event in the last 8 months for Tiger, its been an up and down start to the 2009 season for Mickelson. After a real rough start to the season where Mickelson failed to finish better than 42nd in his first 3 starts, he responded with two wins in his next 3 events, but will be coming into the Masters after failing to make the cut at the Shell Houston Open this past weekend. Either way you have to expect both these guys to be in the thick of things this week at the Masters.

Middle of the Pack: Geoff Ogilvy +2000, Sergio Garcia +2000, Padraig Harrington +2000, Camilo Villegas +3000, Ernie Els +3000, Retief Goosen +3000, Anthony Kim +3000, Paul Casey +4000, Nick Watney +4000, and Jim Furyk +4000

There is a good mix of old and young golfers in this group, and all of them have the game to win this event. It’s a little surprising that Harrington doesn’t have better odds than what he does, after winning the last two majors, and that makes him a great play this weekend. Ogilvy has been a nice surprise this season with 2 wins, but has yet to finish better than a tie for 16th here at the Masters. Els and Garcia will also be looking for their first wins here at Augusta, and it hasn’t been pretty for either of these golfers here over the last 3 years. Guys like Villegas, Kim, Casey, and Watney all have the talent to win, and really get their name up there with the rest of the greats of this game today. One guy I really like out of this group is Goosen, as Goosen has finished in the top 3 of this event 4 times since 2002, and after a real tough couple years Goosen has got his game going again in 2009, with a 3rd place finish at the AT&T Classic and a win just a few weeks ago at the Transitions Championship.

Long Shots: Adam Scott +5000, Mike Weir +5000, Zach Johnson +5000, Vijay Singh +5000, Sean O’Hair +5000, Stewart Cink +6000, Justin Rose +6000, KJ Choi +6000, Stuart Appleby +8000, Trevor Immelman +10000, and Brandt Snedeker +12500

If the last two years tell you anything, its that anyone who tees it up in this event has a chance to win, as nobody saw the wins from Johnson and Immelman coming. While it looks like Singh has lost his touch this season, he did win this event back in 2000. Weir also has a win here at Augusta back in 2003, but has only one other finish in the top 10, coming in 2005 where he finished tied for 5th. There are two golfers that I have my eye on out of this group, and thats O’Hair and Snedeker. As O’Hair nearly won the Arnold Palmer Invitational just a couple weeks back, and is coming off his best finish at the Masters, finishing tied for 14th last year. Snedeker may seem like a little bit of a stretch when it comes to picking a winner this week, as he has failed to make the cut in 5 of his 8 starts this season, but the former PGA Tour Rookie of the Year (2007), looked much better in his last outing finishing tied for 17th at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, and we are talking about a golfer who finished tied for 3rd here at the Masters last year.
