2009 Masters Predictions

Written April 6, 2009 by Jason Lowry

The MastersIt’s an exciting time in golf, as we are just a few days away from the 2009 Masters. For many fans its been a long time coming for this event, as so many viewers were turned away from the game last year when Tiger Woods was unable to take part in the final two majors because of injury, but the wait is over and Woods, who is coming off a win in his last start at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, will be looking for his first Masters win since 2005. After so many years of watching the top names of this sport win green jacket after green jacket, its been a completely different story the last two years, as 2007 winner Zach Johnson and the defending champion Trevor Immelman  have came out of no where to win this event. So while all eyes will be on Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson this week, don’t be surprised if one of the lessor known players is right there in the thick of things come the final round on Sunday. So with that said, here is a look at the 3 golfers I feel have a great shot at winning the first major of the 2009 season.

Tiger Woods +175 odds to  win at Sportsbook.com: Woods is definitely going to get a ton of attention this week, playing in his first Major since winning the US Open last year. While any other golfer would be happy to play at the level Tiger has played here at the Masters, you have to think its killing this guy to not have won here since 2005, especially since he has been right in the thick things, finishing tied for 3rd in 2006 and finishing 2nd in each of the last two years. I believe Woods really took some pressure off himself with the win at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, as he showed everyone that he is back and going to make life hell for the rest of the tour players. What is really scary about this guy, is he is going to keep getting better with the healing of his knee, and the way this guy is putting makes him nearly unbeatable if he is playing anywhere near the top of his game. Woods will need that smooth stroke this week Augusta if he wants to earn yet another green jacket, and I feel like this guy could run away with thing if he gets off to a good start on Thursday and Friday, as no one catches Tiger when he has the lead.

Retief Goosen +3000 odds to win at Sportsbook.com: Goosen could really get himself back on the map with a big showing this weekend at the Masters, as its been a rough couple years for the two time US Open Champion. Goosen seems to have his game going in the right direction again, as he has two top 3 finishes this season, including a win at the Transitions Championship a few weeks back. With that win Goosen has won a professional golf event every year since 1995, but a win this week will be his first at the Masters. Its not as though Goosen hasn’t played well here at Augusta, as he has finished 3rd or better four times since 2002. I expect another great showing from Goosen at the Masters, and he could surprise everyone with a win if Tiger struggles.

Brant Snedeker +12500 odds to win at Sportsbook.com: Don’t get me wrong there are a number of other golfers like Geoff Ogilvy and Padraig Harrington that I think have a great shot at winning this week, Snedeker is my sleeper pick to win this week, as I got a good feeling this guy is going to really get his season going with another strong showing at the Masters. Snedeker was the 2007 PGA Tour Rookie of the Year, and looked like he was on his way to the top with a solid 2008 season, but it has not been a good start to the 2009 season, as Snedeker has failed to make the cut  in 5 of his 8 starts this season, though he did look much better in his last start at the Arnold Palmer Invitational finishing tied for 17th. Snedeker really played well at the Masters last year, as he was right in the thick of things from the first round, but like many of the golfers really struggled on Sunday shooting a 77 and wound finishing in a tie for 3rd four shots back of Immelman. If you are really looking for a sleeper this weekend, I feel like Snedeker is about as good as it gets.

This is one of the best Masters fields in recent memory. There are so many story lines and with Tiger coming off his first victory of the year, it could be another classic. Personally I hope Ernie Els wins his first Masters, he’s one of the best golfers who hasn’t worn the green jacket. I made a list on my site of who I think is the favorite to win this year: http://www.toptentopten.com/topten/2009+masters+favorites. You can vote which changes the rank of each golfer, and if you don’t agree with my picks you can add your own.
