2009 MEAC Men’s Basketball Tournament Predictions
Written March 6, 2009 by Jason Lowry
The 2009 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Men’s Basketball Tournament is set to get underway on March 10, with the championship game scheduled for Saturday, March 14. The tournament will be held at the Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Winston-Salem, NC. The top 5 teams receive a bye, and that will likely play a huge role for the one team that ends up walking away with the tournament trophy and the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. The MEAC is not a very strong basketball conference at all, so regardless of how a team did during the regular season, the only team going to the big dance is the team that wins this tournament. Here is a look at the 3 teams we think have the best shot at winning this tournament, and a sleeper team that could sneak into the finals and possibly win this tournament. 1. Morgan State Bears (20-11, 14-3 MEAC)
The Bears come into the tournament red hot, as they have won 10 of their final 11 games, but one concern remains, and that is the Hampton Pirates, as the Pirates beat the Bears for the 2nd time this season just a little over a week ago.The Bears have been great against SC State and NC A&T going a perfect 2-0 against the No.2 and No.3 teams. The Bears are led by Reggie Holmes, who comes in averaging 16.2 points and 5.1 assists per game. Holmes has to be ready to each and every game if the Bears want to head into the NCAA Tournament and test their game against some of the best schools in the country.
2. S.C. State Bulldogs (16-13, 11-7 MEAC)
The Bulldogs are also playing some pretty strong basketball of late, as they won 6 of their final 7 games. The Bulldogs lost to both NC A&T and Morgan State this season, so they will have to improve if they want to take home the tournament title this weekend. The Bulldogs will need great tournaments out of both Jason Johnson and Jason Flagler, as the two combine for 27 points and 14.8 rebounds a game.
3. N.C. A&T Aggies (16-5, 11-7 MEAC)
The Aggies are a scary team, as they seem to go on streaks of playing some really good basketball, but they can go on a stretch where they can’t buy a win. For instance the Aggies have a 5 game losing streak and a 8 game winning streak to their credit this season. They come in losers of two straight, so who knows if they will snap out of it or finish the season off with yet another loss. The Aggies have a pretty balanced scoring attack, as they have 4 players averaging over 10 points a game.
Sleeper: Hampton Pirates (15-15, 10-8 MEAC)
The Pirates earned their way into the sleeper position by the two wins over Morgan State this season, as any team that has the top seed’s number has to be taken as a serious threat. The Pirates have won two straight heading into the tournament, and one of those wins came against NC A&T on their home floor. The Pirates get scoring from a variety of players, but only Vincent Simpson averages more than 10 points per game, as he leads the Pirates at 11.5 points per contest.
Prediction: Morgan State Bears
