2009 Miami (Ohio) Football Predictions

Written July 27, 2009 by InfoPlays

2009 Miami (Ohio) Football PredictionsThere’s plenty to like about new head coach Michael Haywood. He is a protégé of many successful coaches in Nick Saban, Mack Brown and Charlie Weis and his coaching staff has big-game experience as well. It’s unlikely the Miami (Ohio) Redhawks will make the jump from last to first, or even upper-middle this season, but Haywood likely will prove to be an effective recruiter. This is a MAC program worth watching in the next couple years. Sportsbook.com offers 10% sign-up bonuses and reduced Friday juice. College football is right around the corner, so jump on board this trusted book and start betting on their NCAA football lines today.

Offense: Senior quarterback Daniel Raudabaugh leads an offense that finished 107th in the country last season in scoring at 18.4 points/game. He adapted the pro-style offense of coordinator Peter Vaas in the spring. Raudabaugh, who had eight touchdowns and nine interceptions last season, could have a short leash as a starter if his execution isn’t up to Haywood’s standards. The hope is that he will blossom after an impressive spring showing. He didn’t take many risks in scrimmages and connected on 11 of 14 passes in the spring game.

His best target in the spring was wide receiver Chris Givens, who had nine receptions for 110 yards and 2 touchdowns in the spring game. He’s a physical wideout who can overpower defensive backs, which makes him a solid run blocker as well. Haywood last served as offensive coordinator at Notre Dame, and he has stressed that the program needs elusive playmakers in the backfield. Pass protection becomes a must before he chooses a starting tailback. Junior Thomas Merriweather had 140 carries for 547 yards and four touchdowns in ‘08, and he serves as the top returning rusher and leading candidate to get the job.

Defense: The Redhawks’ 2-10 record last season was the defense’s fault just as much as having a lackluster offense. Miami allowed 32.7 points/game which ranked 101st nationally, but this unit is expected to make major strides in terms of personnel and talent. The new coaching staff will have to make due with what they have in this transition season. Carl Reese came out of retirement to coordinate what is sure to be an innovative defense. His trademark at Texas and LSU was to play his best 11 players no matter the scheme, and he’ll use 4-3, 3-4 and even 2-3-6 looks on occasion against some of the spread offenses in this conference.

Most of the competition comes from the linebacking corps. There are as many as five players in the running for starting jobs to take over for a pair of All-MAC linebackers in the fall. Joey Hudson and Clayton Mullins served as the Redhawks’ top two tacklers last season with a combined 214 stops. The top four tacklers on the team have departed, but senior linebacker Caleb Bostic returns as the top playmaker with a great combination of size and speed. Defensive lineman Martin Channels is a big run stopper in the middle. End Morris Council returns, but he and Channels will have a new band of running mates on the defensive line.
