2009 Mountain West Football Predictions
Written July 1, 2009 by InfoPlays
The Mountain West’s Big Three in Utah, TCU and BYU are non-BCS schools in name only. Everyone else is just trying to keep up. Utah, the only unbeaten team in the country in 2008, showed they were worthy of a BCS bid by beating up on the Alabama Crimson Tide in the Sugar Bowl. The Utes are the only team since the creation of the BCS system to go undefeated twice without a shot at a National Championship. The three aforementioned teams finished No’s. 2, 7 and 25 in the country in the final Associated Press polls last season. The rest of the league is wondering what it will take to break up the grip at the top. College football odds for futures bets are posted at Sportsbook.com where they offer reduced juice on Friday’s!
1.) TCU Horned Frogs – The Frogs’ key offensive cogs return, and Utah has to visit Forth Worth this time. But TCU has no bye weeks to heal up in midseason, and only five defensive starters return on the defense. The Frogs will run right up the BCS standings again if Gary Patterson fills holes at linebacker and keeps QB Andy Dalton healthy. Full Preview: TCU 2009 College Football Predictions
2.) BYU Cougars – Most of the offensive skill players return, led by QB Max Hall who is one of the best at his position in the country. Both Utah and TCU will have to travel to Provo, but the Cougars open with Oklahoma. BYU figures to pull off an upset or two, and they are capable of outscoring most everyone else. 3.) Utah Utes – Sugar Bowl star LB Stevenson Sylvester returns to lead a stacked defense. But QB Brian Johnson and K/P Louie Sakoda are gone, and they must play BYU and TCU on the road. It’s too much to ask for the Utes to go unbeaten again, but Utah will likely cruise to a ninth straight bowl game. Full Preview: Utah NCAA Football Predictions 2009
4.) Air Force Falcons – The Falcons’ offense can be built around QB Tim Jefferson, the MWC Freshman of the Year in ‘08. Any time the Falcons have to replace their place-kicker, it can be an adventure. An early October meeting with Navy will help determine if its going to be a successful season or not at Air Force. 5.) San Diego State Aztecs – Sophomore QB Ryan Lindley was a breakthrough in an otherwise dismal season last year. Former Ball State coach Grady Hoke brings hope to this program and proven success, but he’ll have his work cut out for him considering this is the only school not to attend a bowl in the history of the MWC. Lindley gives the Aztecs an edge over all the teams looking for answer at QB. Full Preview: 2009 San Diego State Football Predictions
6.) UNLV Rebels – Junior Omar Clayton is a winning QB, and Ryan Wolfe is still around to catch his passes. But there isn’t a running threat ready to replace wrecking ball Frank Summers, and the secondary is a work in progress here. The heat is on Mike Sanford to turn this around, and there are reasons to believe this year. Full Preview: UNLV College Football Predictions 2009
7.) Colorado State Rams – A veteran offensive line and receiving corps will make up for the inexperience at quarterback for the Rams. But their top defensive player, LB Ricky Brewer, is out for the season due to suspension. There still isn’t enough talent to separate from the other five outside the Big Three. Full Preview: Colorado State 2009 Football Predictions
8.) Wyoming Cowboys – The Cowboys made a great hire in Dave Christensen, the former Missouri Tigers offensive coordinator. Christensen couldn’t bring quarterback Chase Daniel with him, though. At least he has the Big 12 scouting report when Texas visits Laramie. Full Preview: Wyoming NCAA Football Predictions 2009
9.) New Mexico Lobos – New coach Mike Locksley brings in a new enthusiasm and a new offense. Gone are Rocky Long and his trademark defense, which drove MWC opponents mad. It will be a good first season of learning before the Lobos can start to climb back into contention. Full Preview: 2009 New Mexico Football Predictions
