2009 NBA Finals Game 2 Recap: Lakers Take 2-0 Lead Over Magic

The NBA Finals aren’t over just yet, but the Lakers took a very big step toward another NBA Championship with their overtime win against the Orlando Magic in Los Angeles Sunday night. With their 101-96 victory, the Lakers move to a commanding 2-0 lead in the series, just two wins away from the franchise’s 15th Finals Championship.
There is some good news for the Orlando Magic with the series moving to Orlando Tuesday for three straight games, but last night’s loss was particularly demoralizing considering the Magic probably should have won the game in regulation.
With .06 seconds remaining on the clock, Orlando rookie Courtney Lee broke free from the LA defense and had a clean catch-and-layup right under the basket, but the shot wouldn’t fall. Once the game got to overtime, it was all Lakers, who amped up their defense, winning the overtime period 13-8. I guess the Magic can take some solace in that Game 2 was close, unlike the 100-75 beating they took in Game 1 of the Finals, but I doubt they are brimming with confidence right now.
The Lakers were very fortunate to walk away with a win in Game 2, and you get the feeling that the victory is the one that is going to send the Lakers to another title. So far in the playoffs, the Lakers have had difficulty in their first road game of a series after getting up early on teams, so don’t be surprised if they come out a little flat in this first game in Orlando, but it would be hard to go against the Lakers in the series after seeing both a dominating performance and an nail-biting overtime victory. If the Lakers can manage just one win in this three-game set in Orlando, you can all but close the door on the 2009 NBA Finals.
