2009 Nebraska Football Predictions

The Cornhuskers have enough talent to compete with Kansas for Big 12 North supremacy, but they are a long way from being on an equal footing with the South Division’s best teams. Pelini put some bite back into the Blackshirt defense last season. That unit will have to continue to improve to allow an inexperienced offense to find its way. Injuries at key spots could have a dramatic impact in 2009. Currently, the NCAA football odds at one of the premier sportsbooks in the world have the Huskers listed at +10000 to win the 2010 BCS National Championship.
Offense: Zac Lee emerged from spring practice with the keys to the offense. But he’s thrown just two passes in two previous seasons with the program. That still makes Lee the most experienced quarterback following the graduation of Joe Ganz and the transfer of Patrick Witt. The Huskers ranked in the top 20 of the national rankings in scoring, passing and total offense under Ganz last season. Converted linebacker Latravis Washington, who was a high school QB, and true freshman Cody Green are the likely backups to Lee. With his strong arm and good running ability, it’s no surprise the Lee is the son of former NFL quarterback Bob Lee.
The inexperience at QB will be compounded by the loss of last season’s top two receivers in Nate Swift and Todd Peterson. The duo combined for 125 catches, 1,727 yards and 14 scores a year ago. Menelik Holt and Niles Paul have shown promise, but the rest of this receiving corps is young and inexperienced. Nebraska’s improving running game should provide a nice fallback should the passing game falter. Roy Helu and a slimmed-down Quntin Castille are a pair of proven producers at running back. They will run behind an offensive line that returns three starters in center Jacob Hickman, left guard Keith Williams and left tackle Mike Smith.

Defense: The Huskers were a complete mess defensively when Pelini took over the program. A year later, he sees signs the group could make an impact. After a year of the new system under their belts, he says it’s like second nature now in year two. Nose tackle Ndamukong Suh is the poster boy for Nebraska’s defensive improvement. He was All-Big 12 as a junior and the first Nebraska interior defensive lineman to earn first team all-conference honors since 1999.
The Nebraska Cornhuskers will have to replace five defensive starters, including two along the front that improved tremendously last season. They will benefit from the return of end Barry Turner, who missed most of last season with a broken leg. Redshirt freshmen Sean Fisher and Will Compton have created some buzz on campus at linebacker, where two Huskers must be replaced from last year’s team. All four starters are back in the secondary. Larry Asante, Matt O’Hanlon and Rickey Thenarse provide the Huskers with plenty of experience. Cornerback Anthony West started 11 games last season. Defensive back Anthony Blue, a late-season starter in ‘07, is back after missing last season with a knee injury.
