2009 NFC West Predictions
Written July 22, 2009 by Jason Lowry
The NFC West might have supplied the NFC representative in the Super Bowl, with the Arizona Cardinals magical run through the postseason, but that was about as good as it got for this division. The San Francisco 49ers finished second in the division with a 7-9 record, and it was all but over in this division midway through the season. After winning the division four straight years the Seattle Seahawks struggled in their final season under head coach Mike Holmgren going just 4-12, but no team in this division had it as bad as the St Louis Rams. The Rams won just 2 games in 2008, and once again look to be in rebuilding mode in 2009. While the division should be more competitive in 2009, there won’t be more than one team heading to the postseason.
1. Arizona Cardinals (10-6)
Its hard to imagine this team went just 9-7 in the regular season last year after the performance they put on during the postseason. It looks as though the team is going to end up keeping Anquan Boldin after all, and that is bad news for opposing defenses, as the Cardinals will once again have an elite receiving group with star Larry Fitzgerald and the emerging youngster Steve Breaston. The Cardinals also landed one of the top running backs in the 2009 draft in Ohio State’s Beanie Wells, and he could be the back this team has been looking. Offensive coordinator Todd Haley is gone, but this still figures to be a very good team and the class of the NFC West this season. Read more in our 2009 Arizona Cardinals NFL predictions article.
2. San Francisco 49ers (8-8)
I really liked how this team responded to Mike Singletary as he stepped in during the middle of last season, and if this team continues to improve it could be the surprise team out of this division that challenges the Cardinals for the top spot. The 49ers still have one of the best backs in Frank Gore and added a potential weapon on the outside in wide out Michael Crabtree. The team still needs to decide on who is there starting quarterback, whether it be Shaun Hill or former first round pick Alex Smith, and what kind of play they get out of this position will likely determine just how good this football team will be. 2. Seattle Seahawks (8-8)
I think the Seahawks make a slight improvement this season, as long as they have a healthy Matt Hasselbeck under center. They added a big time playmaker at the receiver position with the addition of Pro Bowler TJ Houshmandzadeh, and he will quickly become Hasselbeck’s go to guy. The Seahawks are also hoping to get a lot more out of running back Julius Jones, and the defense could improve instantly with their first round pick of linebacker Aaron Curry. This might seem high to some people, but this team suffered through a lot of injuries last season. Read more in our 2009 Seattle Seahawks NFL predictions article.
4. St. Louis Rams (5-11)
There is no question that the Rams are making a youth movement, as they let Pro Bowl left tackle Orlando Pace and Pro Bowl wide receiver Torry Holt pack their bags and leave town. The team hopes to have landed a future lock at left tackle with their No. 2 overall pick of Jason Smith. The Rams also added more help to the line with the addition of center Jason Brown, but what this team really needs is quarterback Marc Bulger to prove he can still play this game, as this is likely the final straw for the former Pro Bowl quarterback.
