2009 NFL Mock Draft: 1-5
Written February 28, 2009 by Jack Jones
Craig Trapp is one of the handicappers we have listed here on the site and he’s one of those guys that never leaves “football mode.” Here it is, the end of February, and he’s putting together his mock draft in preparation for handicapping next year’s games. Let’s take a look at who he has pegged for the first five picks of this year’s NFL draft.
1. Detroit Lions
Needs: Quarterback
Without a doubt this team needs a quarterback. They picked Duante Culpepper off the street last year and restructured his contract for this season but he’s not the long term answer.
Pick: Matthew Stafford
Stafford is the best quarterback available in the draft. He has a strong arm and all of the tools needed to become an excellent NFL player.
2. St. Louis Rams
Needs: Wide Receiver and Offensive Tackle
Remember when this team had the Greatest Show on Turf? Those memories are fading and now they need another wide receiver to make plays and take some heat off of Tory Holt. The offensive line hasn’t been able to protect Marc Bulger and they haven’t been able to open up holes for Stephen Jackson either.
Pick: Euguene Moore
He’s the best offensive lineman in the draft and will help shore up the protection. This is a safe pick because he does a good job in the trenches both with run blocking and pass blocking. He’s not as flashy as some other choices, but he’s dependable and less of a risk.
3. Kansas City Chiefs
Needs: Just About Everything
This team needs some play makers on defense more than anything, but they have more holes on their squad than anyone else in the league. At least Tyler Thigpen came in and gave them hope under center.
Pick: Aaron Curry
This guy should be a solid middle linebacker and with the Chiefs playing a 4-3 they will need a solid tackler roaming the center of the field. Of course, if the team can trade this pick to acquire more selections they would probably take the offer in a heart beat.
4. Seattle Seahawks
Needs: Wide Receiver
This team has a lot of receivers but they need quality and not quantity as none of those guys are really a star.
Pick: Michael Crabtree
He shouldn’t go higher than this with the question marks about his health and also his speed. He has the tools to be a big time play maker and would be a nice fit for the Seahawks.
5. Cleveland Browns
Needs: Defense
The Browns got some poor play last year out of their linebackers and defensive backs, so I think they’ll address this need in the draft.
Pick: Rey Maualuga
Sure they would love for the Chiefs to pass on Curry, but Maualuga is also a safe choice. Of course like Kansas City, they would love to have someone offer multiple draft picks to move up here to the five spot.
Tirico Suave saw most of the same players going to different teams. Walker Sports only agrees with Crabtree going to Seattle. Kottie’s Corner agrees with Stafford to Detroit, Crabtree to Seattle, and that the Browns would love Curry.
See Craig’s predictions on picks 6-10 and 11-15.
